Thora Birch is an American actress and producer, best known for starring in American Beauty and Ghost World, a very successful film. She won a BAFTA appointment for the former film and a Golden Globe appointment (Best Actress) for the latter. She has also been nominated for the Emmy Award for her leading role in the biopic TV movie Homeless in Harvard: The Liz Murray Story. At the age of four, Thora Birch began her career in advertising and ended up becoming a child and teenager. Patriot Games, Now and Then, and Alaska are some of her other films at the time.

After becoming famous, she appeared in a series of unnoticed films and then stopped playing. Her parents were not interested in joined by their own experiences in the entertainment industry; however, a babysitter – who discovered her talent – convinced them to share their photographs with an agent.

At the age of 4, Thora Birch was auditioned and selected for the commercial Quaker Oats. More commercials such as Burger King, California Raisins, and Vlasic Pickles followed.

She made her TV and film debut in 1988. Her TV debut was NBC’s sitcom Day by Day (1988-89), while her big-screen debut was in a Purple People Eater sci-fi comedy. She was nominated for both Young Artist Awards and won for both.

In 1989, her guest also participated in the medical drama series Doogie Howser, M.D.

In 1990 she was roped in as one of the leading characters of the Parenthood comedy-drama series. The series went on until 1991 when she was cast in the Paradise drama film and in the romantic Christmas comedy All I Would like for Christmas.

In 1992, in a short film Itsy Bitsy Spider, she portrayed Sally Ryan, the daughter of Jack Ryan (played by Harrison Ford), in the spy action film Patriot Games. The former film was a trade success and in 1994 Thora Birch took up her role with a massive success – Clear and Present Danger.

She was playing Dani, a young girl chased by the villainous comedy trio of witches on Halloween Day, in 1993 in the comedy-fantasy movie Hocus Pocus. The film was initially a disappointment of the box office but later reached cultic status.

In 1994, Thora Birch was seen in the comedy movie Monkey Trouble as Eva Gregory, a girl who takes on a monkey only to discover that she is a trained thief. The film received mixed reviews but was appreciated for its performance.

For the next two years, she took part in the adventure survival film Alaska as younger Tina “Teeny” Tercell and Jessie Barnes (1996).

Before the end of the century, Thora Birch took the role of a lifetime in the black comedy movie American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes. In this 1999 film, she played Jane Burnham, the protagonist’s moody and disillusioned teenage daughter, Lester Burnham.

She received a BAFTA nomination in the best supporting category for her character portrayal. The film itself won five Oscars and is Thora Birch’s greatest commercial success.

During the 1990s, two television films Dark Avenger (1990) and Night Ride Home (1999) were included, two guest performances in the Promised Land and Touched by an Angel series (both 1997) and episodic appearances in sitcoms Married People (1990), Amen (1991), and Monty (1994) and TV series The Outer Limits (1995).

In early 2000, she was active in the black comedy movie Smokers (2000), Dungeons & Dragons (2000), and the psychological horror-thriller The Hole (2001).

In 2001 she also appeared in Terry Zwigoff’s black comedy film Ghost World as the young, jaded, and socially disgusted student Enid Coleslaw. Based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes of the same name, the film received very positive reviews and became a classic of culture. The work of Thora Birch earned her the nomination of the Golden Globe.

Following the episode of a Night Visions horror anthology series in 2002, she played the leading character in Harvard’s biographic movie Homeless: The Liz Murray Story (2003).

The plot was followed by the story of Elizabeth Murray, who continued his studies at Harvard despite her personal difficulties and tragedies. Her work won her an Emmy Award nomination in the category of the leading actress.

In 2012, she co-produced and starred in the independent drama Petunia as Vivian Petunia.

In the meantime, she graduated in law from Kaplan University in 2011 and was President Barack Obama’s delegate to the Democratic Party convention in 2012.


In 2015, Thora Birch loaned her voice to a short film World Gone Water and again took part in the science fiction series Colony in the following year.

Her films released after her return include the Etruscan Smile, an independent comedy-drama, The Competition (also co-producing), and the State’s Political Thriller (all in 2018). The first film was well-received and was even honored with the Best Ensemble Cast award of the Boston Film Festival.

In 2019, she played a cameo in Sundance hit The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and in the tenth season of The Walking Dead, she took the repetitive role of a whisperer called Gamma.

Her other films for 2019 include Above Suspicion, the first FBI agent convicted of murder, and another Kindred Spirits horror thriller.

Her upcoming 2021 film is Lindsay Gossling, who directed 13 minutes of independent drama.
