A professional basketball club from Miami, the Miami Heat, competes in the Eastern Conference of the NBA (NBA). Three NBA titles have been won by the Miami Heat (2006, 2012, and 2013).

In 1988, the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets became the first two expansion teams in the NBA. First season Miami had a 15–15 record, but improved each of the following three seasons, culminating in a playoff spot in 1991–92 (despite a 38–44 regular-season record) The Miami Heat were beaten in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual champion Chicago Bulls in 1993–94, but returned to the postseason the following year and lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round.

Pat Riley became the Miami Heat’s head coach in 1995. Riley led a squad that included All-Stars Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway to a surprise 61–21 record and a division championship in his second season in Miami. A bench-clearing incident in game five of a playoff series against the New York Knicks in 1996–97 marked the beginning of a heated rivalry between the two organizations. In 1997, the Miami Heat were eliminated from the playoffs by the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference finals.

From 1997 to 1998, Miami won three straight division championships. Despite this, the Heat were knocked out of the playoffs by the Knicks in each of those postseasons, including a stunning upset in 1999, when Miami became only the second club in NBA history to lose its first-round series as a conference’s top seed. Miami’s six-year playoff streak ended in 2001–02, and Riley stepped down as head coach after the team finished in last place in the division in 2002–03.

The Miami Heat returned to the playoffs in 2004 after choosing Dwyane Wade in 2003. 2004–05 saw the Heat win 59 games and a division title, and they followed that up by winning seven straight games in the playoffs before succumbing to the Detroit Pistons in an epic Eastern Conference final against New Jersey and Washington.

This season, Riley returned as head coach, and Miami beat Detroit in a rematch of their 2005–06 championship game before beating Dallas in six games to claim their first NBA title. In the years after 2006, Wade has led the Heat to a number of winning seasons, but they have never advanced past the first round of the playoffs.

Once LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Wade in Miami, the team’s fortunes took another turn for the better in the 2009–10 season when Wade signed a long-term contract with the Heat along with James and Bosh. During the 2010–11 NBA season, the Miami Heat were the subject of a considerable lot of media interest.

A poor start to the regular season was followed by an impressive run in the playoffs, as Miami lost just three games in the NBA finals against Dallas. Defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA finals in the 2011–12 season. The following season, the Miami Heat won a franchise-record 66 games and set an NBA record for the second-longest winning streak (27 games) in NBA history, en way to a third straight NBA finals appearance.

With their fourth straight division title in 2013–14, the Miami Heat became the first team in 27 years to make four consecutive final appearances in the NBA Finals after an easy conference playoff run. The Heat, on the other hand, fell to the San Antonio Spurs in five games in their second finals appearance.

As a result of the team’s key stars opting out of their contracts, the franchise (which was predicted to be well above the league’s salary cap) gained additional financial flexibility.

It was a poor Eastern Conference that prevented Miami Heat from making a playoff appearance in 2014–15, as James returned home to Cleveland Cavaliers while Wade and Chris Bosh both inked new contracts. Next season, the Heat won 48 games and qualified for the playoffs, where they were knocked out in the second round.

He is widely considered one of the greatest all-around players of all time and has won NBA championships with the Miami Heat (2012 and 2013, Cleveland Cavaliers (2016), and Los Angeles Lakers (2017).
