David Filoni (born June 7, 1974) is an American director, actor, writer, producer, and animator who has worked in film and television. For example, he has worked on Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Mandalorian, as well as the theatrical picture and television series of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

For all four seasons of Star Wars Rebels, Filoni was the show’s executive producer, and also served as the show’s supervising director for all save the third season, when he accepted a job to manage all Lucasfilm Animation projects while Justin Ridge served as supervising director. Aside from his work on the Star Wars Forces of Destiny online series, Filoni is also credited with creating the 2018–2020 animated series Star Wars Resistance and 2021’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

A Pittsburgh suburb, Dave Filoni was born on June 7, 1974, in Mt. Lebanon. He graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1992 and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1996, both in Pennsylvania.

It is said that Filoni’s father was an opera and classical music fan; as a result, he inherited classical music appreciation and helped with collaboration, with composer Kevin Kiner (who did most of the music for The Clone Wars and Rebels) crediting Filoni for suggesting the organ in Grand Admiral Thrawn’s theme from Rebels. His grandfather and uncle were pilots, with the latter specializing in plane restoration, according to Filoni’s family history. He recognized this as a major factor in the development of the Star Wars Resistance concept.

As a storyboard artist or assistant director, Filoni worked on a variety of animated shows, including King of the Hill, Teamo Supremo, and Kim Possible before moving on to direct numerous episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Nickelodeon’s first season of the animated series. Filoni, a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast, dressed up as the Jedi Master for the opening of Revenge of the Sith as a tribute to the character Plo Koon.

Filoni resigned from his position at Nickelodeon to work with George Lucas on an animated series based on the Star Wars universe. Filoni explained on The Star Wars Show that when he was offered the Star Wars position, he thought it was a joke.  As seen in the DVD extras for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Filoni’s office is filled with Plo Koon memorabilia.

Citation needed As a tribute to Plo Koon’s character, he has the bust of his head, a model of Plo Koon’s ship, an autographed portrait of the actor who portrayed the character, a replica of Plo Koon’s lightsaber, and his own personal costume on display. When it comes to concept art designs for the Clone Wars, Filoni has scrawled the words “Plo Kool” on several of them, suggesting that he found them interesting. Filoni also keeps an Appa figurine from Avatar:

The Last Airbender on his desk. All of the Clone Wars premieres have been attended by Filoni, and he attended the fifth-season premiere at Celebration VI in Orlando, Florida on August 24, 2012. Citation needed Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex are two of his most well-known creations. To explore the beginnings of the new television series and show how The Clone Wars is being constructed, Filoni appeared at Celebration IV with producer Catherine Winder in May 2007.

At the time, he revealed that he would be writing a monthly comic for the Clone Wars. The bounty hunter Embo is voiced by Filoni in several episodes of different seasons. Filoni was made an Honorary Member of the 501st Legion in recognition of his contributions to the ongoing Star Wars saga in February 2009. Citation needed Filoni worked with Greg Weisman and Simon Kinberg as an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels, which premiered in the fall of 2014.

The first two seasons he was also the show’s director of operations. While still executive producer, he named Justin Ridge as his replacement for the duration of the show. At the end of September 2016, Filoni stepped down as supervising director of all Lucasfilm Animation projects.  After that, he returned as supervising director for season 4.

For The Mandalorian, a live-action Star Wars television series that premiered on Disney+ in November 2019, Jon Favreau invited Filoni to collaborate with him in 2019. With his extensive knowledge of the Lucas universe and his ability to influence the show’s storyline from season 2, it is no surprise that he is referred to as “a Lucas encyclopaedia.”  On the show, he serves as an executive producer and director of the first episode, making this his live-action debut.
