Ajay Tyagi is a Himachal Pradesh cadre IAS officer from the 1984 batch, is currently the Department of Economic Affairs’ Additional Secretary, and is in charge of capital markets, among other things. He is a senior bureaucrat, was appointed chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Friday, succeeding U K Sinha, whose extended term ends on March 1.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering and his master’s degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, a world-class engineering school.
Mr. Tyagi earned his master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University in the United States. Before entering the Finance Ministry as Additional Secretary on November 1, 2014, he was Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.
Tyagi has also served in the ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Steel, and Rural Development during his time at the Centre. He worked for the Himachal Pradesh government in a variety of capacities, including electricity, revenue, finance, and information technology.
Tyagi has served on the Reserve Bank of India’s board of directors for a short time (RBI). Many senior bureaucrats, including Power Secretary P K Pujari, were in contention in the run-up to the appointment of the capital markets regulator.
On February 18, 2011, when the previous UPA government was in force, incumbent Sinha, a 1976 batch IAS officer from the Bihar cadre, took over as Sebi chairman. Later, he was granted a two-year extension. He was granted another extension until March 1, 2017, just days before his term ended in February of last year.
