Anand Kumar (Super 30) is an Indian mathematician best known for his Super 30 curriculum, which he established in Patna, Bihar, in 2002 and which prepares underprivileged students for the IIT-JEE, the Indian Institutes of Technology’s entrance test (IITs).

Anand Kumar was born in the Indian state of Bihar on January 1, 1973. His father worked for the Indian Postal Service as a clerk. Since his father could not afford private schooling for his children, Anand enrolled in a Hindi-medium government school, where he discovered his passion for mathematics. He attended Patna High School in Patna, Bihar, during his youth. Kumar submitted articles on number theory after his graduation that were published in the Mathematical Spectrum. Kumar was accepted to the University of Cambridge, but he was unable to attend due to the death of his father and his financial situation.

Kumar started teaching mathematics in 1992. He started his own institute, the Ramanujan School of Mathematics, by renting a classroom for Rs. 500 per month (RSM). His class expanded from two to thirty-six students in a year’s time, and after three years, almost 500 students had enrolled. When a poor student approached him in early 2000, pursuing IIT-JEE coaching but unable to pay the annual admission fee due to poverty, Kumar was inspired to launch the Super 30 programme in 2002, for which he is now well-known.

The Ramanujan School of Mathematics has held a competitive test to pick 30 students for the Super 30 programme every May since 2002. Many candidates sign up for the exam, and he ultimately hires thirty talented students from socially deprived communities, tutors them, and provides them with learning materials and accommodation for a year. He helps them study for the Joint Entrance Examination for Indian Institutes of Technology (JEE-IIT) (IIT). His mother, Jayanti Devi, prepares meals for the students, while his brother, Pranav Kumar, manages the market.

From 2003 to 2017, 391 out of 450 students completed the IITs. In 2010, all of Super 30’s students passed the IIT JEE entrance exam, making it three years in a row for the institution. Kumar gets no sponsorship for Super 30 from either government or private entity, and depends entirely on the tuition fees he receives from the Ramanujan Institute. Kumar got offers for financial assistance from the private sector – both national and foreign firms – as well as the government after the success of Super 30 and its increasing fame, but he turned them down because he wanted to keep Super 30 going on his own.

In the years 2006-2007, 30 out of 30 students completed the IIT-JEE. Kumar started teaching mathematics in 1992, and his pass rates for the 30 students in the prestigious IIT-JEE exams were: 2011–24, 2012–27, 2013–28, 2014–27, 2015–25, 2016–28, 2017–30, and 2018–26.
