Annabelle is a supposedly haunted Raggedy Ann doll that lives in the occult museum of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. In the Conjuring Universe, a personality based on the doll is a repeated antagonist.

Background:

According to the Warrens, the doll was provided to a student nurse in 1970. They claimed that the doll was acting strangely and that a psychic medium informed the student that the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a deceased girl named “Annabelle.” The student and her roommate attempted to accept and develop the spirit-possessed doll, but it allegedly displayed malicious and horrifying behavior. The Warrens claim they were first contacted at this point, and they moved the doll to their museum after declaring it demonically possessed. The doll is still housed in a glass case at The Warrens’ Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut.

According to Joseph Laycock, assistant professor of religious studies at Texas State University says most skeptics dismiss Warren’s museum as “full of off-the-shelf Halloween junk, dolls and toys, books you could buy at any bookstore.” Laycock describes the Annabelle legend as an “exciting case study in the relationship between pop culture and paranormal folklore,” and speculates that the demonic doll trope popularized by movies such as Child’s Play, Dolly Dearest, and The Conjuring likely arose from early legends surrounding Robert the Doll, as well as a Twilight Zone season 5 episode 6 titled “Living Doll”. According to Laycock, “the concept of supernaturally dolls allows modern demonologists to find supernatural evil in the most banal and domestic of places.”

In response to the publicity for the Warrens’ occult museum coinciding with the release of The Conjuring, science writer Sharon A. Hill stated that many of the mythologies surrounding the Warrens appear to be “of their own making,” and that many people may have difficulty “separating the Warrens from their Hollywood portrayal.” Hill slammed the press for sensationalizing the Warrens’ occult museum and its Annabelle doll. “Like real-life Ed Warren, real-life Annabelle is actually far less inspiring,” she said. “We have nothing but Ed’s word for this, as well as the history and origins of the objects in the museum,” Hill said of Ed Warren’s supernatural claims about Annabelle.

The doll was also demonstrated in Gerald Brittle’s 1980 biography of Edward and Lorraine Warren, The Demonologist.

Character:

The doll’s story inspired the Annabelle doll character portrayed in The Conjuring Universe, a movie that involves Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), and Annabelle Comes Home (2018). (2019). The producers did not use Raggedy Ann’s likeness, partly because it would have required special permission, and partly to make the doll’s appearance more unsettling for a horror movie; its appearance has been described as a “terrifying porcelain doll that is disfigured and instantaneously menacing.” The character appeared briefly in James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 (2016), Aquaman (2018), The Curse of La Llorona (2019), and Shazam.
