Arvind Swami’s father, V. D. Swami, was an industrialist; his mother, Vasantha, was a Bharatanatyam dancer. Swamy received his education from the Sishya School and then continued it at the Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School. He finished his formal education in the year 1987. He continued his education and received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Loyola College in Madras in 1990. After that, he moved to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in international business at Wake Forest University, located in North Carolina. Arvind Swami had the ambition to pursue a career in medicine.

In college, he worked as a model to make extra money. He was asked to leave the stage during his performance with the Loyola Theatre Society since his work was not properly accepted. After some time had passed, Mani Ratnam spotted him in an advertisement and decided to set up a meeting with him. After that, he and Santosh Sivan instructed him on the fundamentals of the filmmaking process. Swamy made his acting debut in the action drama film Thalapathi directed by Mani Ratnam. In this film, he portrayed a young district collector pitted against a don and his biological brother.

In the following years, Mani Ratnam cast him in the starring role of the political drama film Roja, released in 1992. At the State and National Film Award ceremonies, the films Roja and Bombay took home a trophy. Time Magazine referred to his performance in Bombay as having “soulful” qualities. The films Swamy has directed have garnered him several famous and critical accolades. One of the first few actors in India capable of having appeal throughout India, he has been regarded as having pan-Indian appeal.

In the 1995 version of Disney’s The Lion King (initially released in 1994), Swamy lent his voice to the role of adult Simba in the Tamil dub. He had a role in Rajiv Menon’s film Minsaara Kanavu, which not only received positive reviews but also took home four National Film Awards. After performing a cameo part in Mani Ratnam’s film Alaipayuthey in 2000, Swamy focused on his business pursuits rather than continuing his acting career.

Swamy served as the director of V D Swamy and Company, which was involved in building and international commerce. He served as the president of InterPro Global and the chairman and managing director of Prolease India, a company that processes transactions. After that, he established Talent Maximus in India, a firm involved in payroll processing and temporary employment. He was the only actor in India who took an active stance against fan organizations.

He had a role in the disastrous film Sasanam (2006), in which he also appeared. After 4–5 years, he had planned to return to the film industry, but he had a physical injury then. Additional 4–5 years were required for the treatment. For Swamy to play a part in one of Mani Ratnam’s movies, Kadal (2013), which needed him to lose 15 kg, Mani Ratnam contacted him again after his successful treatment. Ceylon, a film directed by Santhosh Sivan, featured his voice-over work in 2013.
