Bernie Sanders, born September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, United States, is an American politician who was first elected to the United States Senate in 2006 and assumed office the following year. He previously served as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, from 1981 to 1989, and as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007. He ran for President of the United States in 2016 and 2020, despite being officially unconnected with any political party.

Sanders grew raised in the Flatbush neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York, as the son of Jewish parents of Polish origin. The family was financially strapped, and income inequality would eventually become one of his major political concerns. He attended Brooklyn College before graduating from the University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1964. He became interested in the civil rights movement while in Chicago, and he marched in the 1963 March on Washington. He went to live on a kibbutz in Israel after graduating.

Sanders returned to the United States and settled in Vermont, where he worked as a union carpenter and freelance journalist while participating in the communal back-to-the-land movement. He also became involved in the anti-Vietnam War movement, which led to him running for office. He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Vermont (1972, 1976, and 1986) and the United States Senate (1972, 1976, and 1986) as an Independent (1972 and 1974). He ran for mayor of Burlington, where he had settled, in 1981. He won by a sliver of a vote. Sanders (who had a son from a previous relationship) met Jane O’Meara Driscoll, who had three children from a previous marriage, and the two married after a seven-year engagement.

Sanders ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1988 but lost. He was, nevertheless, voted to the body two years later. Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, caucused with the Democrats after gaining office in 1991. He created the Congressional Progressive Caucus in 1991, and is known for his liberal attitude. He was a staunch opponent of President George W. Bush’s administration and the Republican Party, voting against the Iraq War and standing out in particular for his opposition to tax cuts for the affluent and businesses, as well as cuts to social welfare expenditure. He was re-elected seven times, each time with a large margin of victory.

Sanders campaigned for the United States Senate in 2006 and handily won. The following year, he was elected and continued his campaign for tax reform. In 2010, he held the floor for nearly nine hours in a filibuster to prevent the Bush tax cuts from being extended. The Address: A Historic Filibuster on Corporate Greed and the Decline of Our Middle Class was the title of his populist speech (2011). He was also a strong opponent of the 2013 federal government shutdown, which he blamed on the Republican Party’s disproportionate influence from big-money interests. Aside from tax and social-welfare issues, Sanders championed climate change, veterans’ issues, and renewable energy laws and amendments.Senator Bernie Sanders (right) and Representative Brad Sherman (left) speak at a press conference concerning major banks in 2013.

Sanders launched his candidacy for President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election in April 2015. Many experts first discounted his candidacy, believing Hillary Clinton to be the inevitable Democratic nominee. His populist proposals, which some characterised as unrealistic, and his excitement, on the other hand, were well received by many people, particularly younger Democrats. Sanders’ campaign agenda was largely focused on domestic issues. He advocated for universal health care, more taxes on the wealthy, and free tuition at public schools and institutions. He also supported campaign finance reform and suggested tighter Wall Street rules. The battle between Sanders and Clinton was fairly close when the primary election season began in February 2016. However, by the next month, he had fallen significantly behind Clinton in terms of delegates, despite maintaining a strong—and fervent—voter base. In July, Sanders formally endorsed Clinton, who had won the Democratic Party’s candidacy the month before.

Sanders wrote Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In after Clinton lost the presidential election to Republican Donald Trump (2016). Sanders remained a powerful figure in progressive politics, and he was widely credited with helping to shift the Democratic Party’s policy to the left. Reports of misogyny and pay inequity in Sanders’ 2016 campaign came amid rumours that he will run for president again. He officially apologised in January 2019 and promised to “do better” if he ran again. Sanders announced his presidential candidacy the next month.

Sanders immediately rose to the top of the polls, but his leftist platform prompted concerns about his general election viability. The Democratic Party’s more moderate wing became more concerned, especially following Sanders’ strong showings in the early primaries and caucuses. However, Joe Biden’s landslide victory in South Carolina in late February 2020 significantly changed the race. Sanders’ attempt to restore momentum was hampered by the coronavirus pandemic, which caused a number of races to be postponed and prevented in-person rallies. Biden, who was less progressive than Sanders, quickly took a commanding lead in delegates, and Sanders’ attempt to regain momentum was hampered by the coronavirus epidemic, which caused a number of contests to be postponed and prohibited in-person rallies. Sanders formally endorsed Biden immediately after suspending his campaign in April. Sanders pressed for universal health care, a topic that became more serious as the flu pandemic in the United States progressed. He cosponsored the Make Billionaires Pay Act in August 2020, a proposed measure that would tax billionaires’ wealth gains during the financial crisis, with the proceeds going toward Americans’ out-of-pocket health bills for a year.
