Brad Paisley, full name Brad Douglas Paisley, is an American country music singer-songwriter and guitarist who was one of the genre’s most influential performers in the early twenty-first century, known for skillfully crafted songs that were often infused with wry humour.

Paisley grew up in a small West Virginia town. His grandfather, who had introduced him to country music, gave him a guitar when he was eight years old. He formed a band with his guitar teacher after playing in church and at various local events. Paisley attracted the attention of the programme director of a local radio station, who invited him to perform on Jamboree USA, the station’s long-running live country music programme, when he was 12 years old. As a regular on the show for the next eight years, he honed his act. Paisley began his education at West Liberty State College in West Liberty, West Virginia, in 1991, and later moved to Belmont University in Nashville, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music business in 1995.

The ballad “He Didn’t Have to Be,” an affectionate homage to stepfathers that was Paisley’s first number one hit on the Billboard country singles chart, helped the album sell over one million copies. He made his first of dozens of appearances at Nashville’s famed Grand Ole Opry the same year, and was later inducted into the institution (2001). Paisley returned in 2001 with the album Part II, after being nominated for a Grammy Award for best new artist. Paisley’s reputation as a clever lyricist was cemented by the hit single “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song),” and guest appearances by Buck Owens and George Jones demonstrated his passion for traditional country music at a time when many country artists downplayed the genre’s roots in the pursuit of crossover success.

Paisley was born and raised in the West Virginia town of Glen Dale. Douglas Edward “Doug” Paisley, a West Virginia Department of Transportation employee, and Sandra Jean “Sandy” (née Jarvis) Paisley, a teacher, are his parents. His maternal grandfather, Warren Jarvis, gave him his first instrument, a Sears Danelectro Silvertone, and taught him how to play it when he was eight years old, according to him. He sang in his church for the first time in public when he was in third grade. Initially, they planned to make him perform the song on the guitar rather than the piano. “Forget the choir, let’s just make Brad do the whole thing,” the adults said after hearing him sing the song. He didn’t have to ask for a job again until he left Glen Dale. The nice thing about living in a small town is that if you want to be an artist, they’ll make it happen.” Clarence “Hank” Goddard, a local guitarist, had been teaching him. By the age of 13, Goddard and Paisley had founded “Brad Paisley and the C-Notes,” which included two of Paisley’s adult mates.

His principal heard him perform “Born On Christmas Day” in junior high and asked him to perform at a nearby Rotary Club meeting. Tom Miller, the programme director of a radio station in Wheeling, West Virginia, was in attendance. Miller approached him and asked if he wanted to be a guest on Jamboree USA. He was invited to join the show’s weekly lineup after his first appearance. He went on to open for country singers including The Judds, Ricky Skaggs, and George Jones for the next eight years. He will be inducted into the Jamboree USA Hall of Fame as the youngest person ever. He also played at the Hills Jamboree.

Paisley attended West Liberty State College in West Liberty, West Virginia, for two years after graduating from John Marshall High School in Glen Dale, West Virginia. He earned a full ASCAP scholarship to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he majored in music business and graduated from the Mike Curb School of Music Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1995. He worked as an intern at ASCAP, Atlantic Records, and Fitzgerald-Hartley Management. He met Frank Rogers, a fellow student who would later become his producer, while still in college. Kelley Lovelace, Paisley’s songwriting partner, was also introduced to him. In college, he met Chris DuBois, who would also compose songs for him.

Paisley signed a songwriting deal with EMI Music Publishing a week after graduating from Belmont, and he wrote David Kersh’s “Top 5” hit “Another You,” as well as David Ball’s 1999 single “Watching My Baby Not Come Back.” Ball was also a co-writer on the latter album.

With the song “Who Needs Pictures,” he made his debut as a singer with the Arista Nashville label (released February 1, 1999). He made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry in May of that year. Paisley’s first No. 1 hit came seven months later with “He Didn’t Have to Be,” a song about Paisley’s regular co-writer Kelley Lovelace and Lovelace’s stepson, McCain Merren. In addition to “Me Neither,” the album yielded a Top 20 hit with “Me Neither” and his second number one hit, “We Danced,” both in 2000. The album was certified platinum in February 2001.

Paisley went on to win the Country Music Association’s (CMA) Horizon Award as well as the Academy of Country Music’s best new male vocalist award in 2000. A year later, he was nominated for his first Grammy Award for Best New Artist. He accepted the invitation when he was 28 years old. Paisley and Chely Wright performed a song they co-wrote called “Hard to Be a Husband, Hard to Be a Wife” in a PBS 75th anniversary concert special. This song was later included on the Grand Ole Opry 75th Anniversary, Vol. 2 compilation album. The show will be nominated for a CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year. 12] Paisley would later co-write the songs “One Night in Las Vegas,” “Horoscope,” and “Not as In Love” for Wright’s 2001 album Never Love You Enough. Paisley co-produced the first two songs with her, as well as playing guitar on them and including members of his road band, The Drama Kings; he also performed backing vocals on “One Night in Las Vegas” and “Not as In Love.”
