American fullback Cortez Thaddeus Ham Jr. was born on July 22, 1993, and now plays for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). During the 2016 NFL Draft, he was not selected by any team. Augustana was his college of choice for playing football. In 2011, Ham earned his diploma from Duluth Denfeld High School, where he was a standout athlete in both football and track & field.

In football, Ham was a three-year letter winner for the Hunters and a two-year starting running back. He racked up 1,873 total yards and 24 touchdowns between his junior and senior years while playing for head coaches Frank Huie and Chris Vold. On defense, he collected 109 tackles. As a result of his outstanding performance throughout the year, he was chosen for all-conference and all-section teams and was given an honorable mention for all-state.

From 2011 through 2015, Ham received a football and track & field scholarship to attend Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. While there, he was a four-year letter winner in each sport. While playing football at the Augustana Vikings, Ham ran for 2,662 yards and scored 29 touchdowns. He also had 949 yards receiving and scored six touchdowns. In his last season, Ham caught 39 passes for 431 yards and scored three touchdowns.

While competing in track and field, Ham earned All-NSIC honors in the shot put on two separate occasions. At this point, he owns the school record in the indoor weight throw and the outdoor hammer throw. In 2012, Ham was a true freshman and wore a red shirt. That year, he participated in nine games and started three as a fullback. At the end of the season, Ham rushed for 404 yards on 82 attempts (4.9 yards per carry) and scored two touchdowns. In addition, he grabbed seven receptions for 40 yards. When they played Upper Iowa on October 13, he set a new season best with 105 yards rushing.

Ham converted to running back as a sophomore in 2013 and played in all 11 games. He rushed the ball 106 times for 422 yards (3.7 yards per carry and 35.2 yards per game) and scored four rushing touchdowns. On September 6, he established a new career best in running yards in a game with 146 yards and two touchdowns while playing against Minnesota Crookston.

On September 27, 2014, he faced UMary and had a rushing performance that earned him 69 yards and two scores. In his last year of high school, 2015, Ham continued his career with the team as a starter at running back and participated in all 12 contests. In addition to being named to the second team of All-NSIC, he set a career-best with 1,097 yards rushing and scored 16 touchdowns. On November 7, he developed a new career best by carrying the ball 30 times in a game against Winona State. He finished with 96 yards and three touchdowns.

He finished the regular season with 1,043 running yards and 15 rushing touchdowns for Augustana, helping to lead the team to its first postseason berth since 2010 and a trip to the playoffs. After the Vikings rookie minicamp, Ham became the sixth player in Augustana’s program history to sign with an NFL club on May 10, 2016. Ham was marked as a free agent to the 90-man roster.

In Ham’s first preseason game, the Club defeated the Bengals 17–16. Ham led the team in running with 35 yards on 12 runs, including a touchdown run of 10 yards, and caught one pass for 9 yards. During the preseason, Ham led the Vikings in running yards with 140 yards on 44 carries, including two touchdowns. Ham also led the Vikings in rushing touchdowns. Ham was removed from the Vikings’ active roster as part of the team’s final roster cuts on September 3, 2016, and immediately signed to the practice squad the following day. On December 23, 2016, he received a promotion and was placed on the active roster.

Ham announced the rookie minicamp that he would be switching positions and playing fullback instead of running back full-time. He was added to the 53-man active roster, and in Week 2 of the season, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he scored his first touchdown in the National Football League on his first run in the NFL with a one-yard plunge from the goal line. For the 2017 campaign, he ended with seven runs for 13 running yards, a rushing score, and seven catches for 68 receiving yards. In addition, he had seven receptions for 68 receiving yards.
