Callum Keith Rennie is a Canadian actor born in the United Kingdom on September 14, 1960. He began his career in Canadian film and television ventures, and his portrayal of Stanley Raymond Kowalski on the television series Due South brought him his first taste of worldwide acclaim. Keith Rennie was born in Canada. After years of performing in over 125 productions in Canada and internationally, he gained widespread recognition for his depiction of Leoben Conoy on Battlestar Galactica. After that, he became renowned for his role as record producer Lew Ashby on the Showtime series Californication.

Although Rennie is most often seen in the role of the antagonist in movies (and even more frequently in the many guest appearances he makes on American television programs), his involvement in Canadian films regularly affords him the chance to demonstrate a broader spectrum of his acting talents, for which he has won several prizes. His family moved to Canada when he was four years old, and he has lived there ever since.

As the middle child of three brothers, Rennie grew up in the middle-class neighborhood of Edmonton, Alberta. He received his diploma from Strathcona High School, where he became friends with Bruce McCulloch, who later appeared in The Kids in the Hall. He left Edmonton for short spells in Vancouver and Toronto before settling in Vancouver. After dropping out of college, he worked various odd jobs while supporting himself financially.

After a significant battle with alcoholism in his younger years, Rennie eventually brought his dependency under control at the age of 33. At that point, he could devote himself to a career in acting. He enjoys painting and is influenced by abstract expressionist painters such as Basquiat, Motherwell, and Pollock (the Champion spark-plug emblem tattoo on his right arm is a tribute to Stuart Davis).

In his younger years, Rennie was a dedicated mountain climber and continues to compete in various sports today. Even though he enjoys playing hockey, his true passion is golf. At the age of 25, Rennie transitioned from working in radio at the University of Alberta to pursuing a career in acting. He began his career on stage, appearing in Amerika, a play adapted from a book by Franz Kafka, at the A.B.O.P. Theatre in Edmonton. This was followed by the highly praised performance of American Buffalo at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival.

After studying at the Bruhanski Theatre Studio in Vancouver, he debuted in professional theater in 1989 with a performance in Sally Clark’s Lost Souls and Missing Persons, which Touchstone Theatre put on. Because of this, he was invited to participate in productions at the Shaw Festival, where he performed in “Man and Superman” and “Pinero’s Trelawny of the Wells.”

Purple Toast, an independent film from Canada that was shot in 1990 but didn’t come out until 1993, was where Rennie’s first movie debut occurred. Also, in 1993, he started appearing on television in supporting parts for shows like Highlander and Forever Knight, as well as the reimagined version of The Outer Limits. During this period, Rennie’s starring performances in the television films Paris or Somewhere (1994) and For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down (1996), both of which he starred in, helped raise his name within the Canadian entertainment business.

As a result of the issues that occurred during the filming of the last picture, Rennie has sworn that he would never again work for the C.B.C., even though he has continued to be a steadfast supporter of the Canadian industry. After making his debut on an episode of The X-Files, he was allowed to play Alex Krycek, but he declined the part. At the time, he was unwilling to commit to a television series.

His career took off fast, and he soon began appearing in more significant parts in films produced in Canada (including the independent short film Frank’s Cock, directed by Mike Hoolboom, and Mina Shum’s Double Happiness, starring as Sandra Oh’s love interest; for this performance, he was nominated for a Genie Award in the category of best-supporting actor). In addition, he has appeared in more significant parts of television programs, such as a two-part episode of La Femme Nikita.

The most notable of his early parts were as the guitar player Billy Tallent in Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo (1996) and as the detective Stanley Raymond Kowalski in the third and fourth seasons of the Canadian television series Due South, broadcast in over 150 countries. Both of these performances brought him a great deal of attention. His character from the video game Hard Core Logo inspired the naming of the Canadian band Billy Talent. His “disaffected intensity and hungover good looks” provided an edge to the series Due South, which he played in. As for his role in Due South, this has been said.

After that, Rennie became known for his regular performances as the guru of a convenience shop named Newbie in Don McKellar’s cult television series Twitch City and as detective Bobby Marlowe on the critically acclaimed series Da Vinci’s Inquest. His performance as the sex marathoner Craig Zwiller in Don McKellar’s Last Night was the basis for his first Genie Award, which he received in 1999.

Following a part in David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (1999), his first appearance on the big screen was as the thug Dodd in Christopher Nolan’s Memento (2000), which led to his first worldwide breakthrough in the film industry. In the same year, he portrayed a creepy yet alluring vagrant in the movie Suspicious River. Rennie increased his acting range by showing more adult characters, such as the fathers in Falling Angels (2003) and Flower and Garnet (2002). Previously, he had described youthful, rebellious characters as detrimental to themselves.

In the historical drama Torso: The Evelyn Dick Story (2002), he played the role of Inspector Wood, who maintained his composure throughout the story, and in Wilby Wonderful (2004), he played the role of a quiet dyslexic painter. He has appeared as a guest actor in episodes of television broadcast in Canada or the United States, including Mutant X, The Dead Zone, Smallville, Supernatural, The L Word, Bionic Woman, and most recently, Harper’s Island.

During this same period, he has portrayed vastly different characters in films such as The Butterfly Effect, H2O: The Last Prime Minister, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Blade: Trinity (2004), Lucid (2005), Unnatural & Accidental (2006), The Invisible, Tin Man, Normal, Silk (2007), and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008). Because of his recurrent role as the Cylon Leoben Conoy in the rebooted Battlestar Galactica (2003–09) and his depiction of the record producer Lew Ashby for the whole of the second season of Californication (2008), he has gained a new level of broad and worldwide popularity.

On the A.B.C. sitcom FlashForward, Rennie portrayed the role of a man called Jeff Slingerland, also known as Dr. Maurice Raynaud, during the 2009–2010 season. David Goyer, who had previously directed him in Blade and The Invisible, had said that he would return to the series and was scheduled to participate in the second season before the show was canceled. Goyer had directed him in both of those films. In the eighth season of 24, he also had a guest starring role as the Russian gangster Vladimir Laitanan.

Shattered is a series about a detective with multiple personality disorders, and he portrayed the main character of Detective Brian Sullivan on the show during the fall season of 2010. It was first shown on Global T.V. in Canada, and subsequent broadcasts took place in several other countries, except the United States. Rennie’s performance garnered praise from the reviewers, and in 2011, he was awarded both the Gemini and the Leo for his work in the part. The television show Shattered will not continue for a second season.

In the Canadian film Gunless, a Western comedy starring Paul Gross, he appeared in 2010 as a bounty hunter on the trial of Gross’ Montana Kid. This was one of his performances on the big screen in the year 2010. In the film Trigger, he appeared as Billy Tallent for a few minutes. This one, starring Molly Parker and Tracy Wright and written by Daniel MacIvor, is about the reunion of two women who used to be in an alternative rock band together. The Trigger is one of the numerous films in the same world as Hard Core Logo, directed once again by Bruce McDonald.

In addition to that, Rennie was an executive producer on the Trigger film. Another film titled Faith, Fraud & Minimum Wage, based on the play Halo written by Canadian playwright Josh MacDonald, has been finished and is now awaiting its release. In 2011, Rennie appeared in several episodes of several television shows, including The Killing, where he played the supporting character of Rick Felder, Detective Sarah Linden’s fiance. In addition, he has appeared as a guest star on episodes of Alphas, C.S.I.: Miami, and Rookie Blue.

In addition to that, Rennie has been given a recurring role on the N.B.C. series The Firm. He takes on the part of Ray McDeere, the main character’s brother, Mitch McDeere, who portrays Josh Lucas. It started broadcasting in the middle of the 2011–12 season as a substitute for another show. In 2015, Rennie was selected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming second season of the Amazon series The Man in the High Castle. When he joined the ensemble cast, he was cast as Gary Connell, the head of the West Coast Resistance organization.
