During her shows, theatres and films, her best performance was her eleven years and 286 episodes, ‘The Carol Burnett Show.’ The show allowed her not only to show her multi-talented side but also gave audiences a taste of an upgraded television show with comedy sketches as parodies, music numbers, weekly guest stars and question-answer segments. In her fifty years as an actor and comedian, she literally governed the field and received numerous awards and honours.

Carol Creighton Burnett was born in San Antonio, Texas on 26 April 1933 to Joseph Thomas Burnett and Ina Louise. Her dad was a director of cinema, and her mother was an advertiser.

It was a traumatic childhood for Burnett. Both her parents had alcoholism. After their legal separation, she was brought up by her mother’s grandmother, who instilled the love of films in young Burnett.

She graduated from high school in Hollywood in 1951. She then enrolled in a journalism course at the University of California, Los Angeles. After the new year, however, she moved her majors to theatre and English.

Burnett was eager to enter a dramatic programme, but she needed to attend a performance workshop. She rebelliously joined, but she was so smitten that she decided to do her profession.

She performed for several theatre and university productions. She discovered her natural comic timing and musical abilities at each performance. Although her mother did not accept her career as an actor, she continued her newfound passion.

During her senior year, her performance at a professor’s private party marked her fate of a glorious future. A boss was so impressed by her performance that he gave her a $1000 interest-free loan that enabled her to pursue a dream in New York and enter showbiz. After a couple of hours in the local show, in 1955 the popular children’s TV show, “The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show” became her big break as a girlfriend to ventriloquist’s dummy.

In 1956, the role of the gawky friend of Buddy Hackett in the short-lived NBC sitcom ‘Stanley’ was bagged. Burnett’s premature conclusion led to cabarets and nightclubs in New York. It was during this time that her remarkable performance in the new song ‘I Made A Fool of Myself’ brought laughter to the spectator.

In 1957 she showed at night time on the ‘The Tonight Show’ and ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ of Jack Paar. The same year, she appeared in ‘Pantomine Quiz’ the earliest game show on TV.

In 1959, she became a regular player in the popular “The Garry Moore Show” series which continued until 1962. For this show, she played a repertoire of characters, the most advantageous being that she was a cleaning lady who eventually became her alter ego. In the same year, she won her first Emmy prize in a Variety or Musical Program or Series in the category of Outstanding Performance.

Burnett was a household name because of the phenomenal success of the Moore show. She co-starred her success storey with her second Emmy, Julie Andrews at ‘Julie and Carol at Carnegia Hall.’ She appeared in several shows during this time.

In 1964 she performed ‘Fade Out-Fade In’ in a Broadway musical but her look was short because of a neck injury. She returned temporarily but only left ‘The Entertainers’ for the variety programme for one season.

Her friendship with Jim Nabors gave her a repeated role as a hard body, and later as a gunnery sergeant, in the successful series ‘Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.’

In 1966, she became her mentor to Lucille Ball. She appeared in several episodes of ‘The Lucy Show,’ the former signature show. Her character travelled from a shy and inhibited man to a fashion bombshell in the show.

Burnett’s successful career reached its peak in September 1967, when the ‘Carol Burnett Show’ first on CBS. The show included a talented comedy club with comedy sketches, musical numbers, weekly guest stars and questions. They parodied movies, TV and advertisements.

The Carol Burnett Show was a huge success in its first season and a loyal audience that lasted all seasons. In the eleven years of the show, 23 Emmy Awards and several nominations were presented for the Golden Globe.

Burnett, feeling that the show had gone its way, decided to end it with a high note. On 17 March 1978, the farewell episode lasted for two hours and included a recap of traditional footage from the show, guest appearances, and favourite rubbish played by the prolonged characters.
