O’Hara was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1954, O’Hara was the sixth of seven children. She was raised as a Catholic and is of Irish ancestry. As an actress and writer, O’Hara received critical acclaim for her work on the sketch comedy series Second City Television (1976–84), for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1981 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. When asked in 1983 if she was a good Catholic girl at heart, she replied, “I’m pretty much.” On the set of Beetlejuice, O’Hara ran into production designer Bo Welch.

The couple tied the knot in 1992 and went on to have a child, Matthew, in 1993. Catherine O’Hara is a singer-songwriter in her own right, having written and performed songs for Christopher Guest’s film A Mighty Wind. Her sister is a singer-songwriter, Mary Margaret O’Hara. She is a citizen of both the United States and Canada. Her current residence is in Los Angeles, California, where she lives with her wife.

(2006). Her performance in the latter film earned her the National Board of Review’s Best Supporting Actress award as well as a nomination for an Independent Spirit Awards.

For her work in the crime drama film The Life Before This, she was honored with a Genie Award in 2000. Kate McCallister, Kevin’s mother, in the 1990 Christmas comedy film Home Alone and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, made her a household name (1992).

After playing Aunt Ann opposite Claire Danes in Temple Grandin in 2010, O’Hara was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film. She won five consecutive Canadian Screen Awards for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Schitt’s Creek (2015–2020) and was nominated twice for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, which she won in 2020.

Her other roles include Jackie Martin in Glenn Martin, DDS, Miss Malone in The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, Kassandra in Skylanders Academy, and Liz Larsen in the film Committed, among many more. She has also appeared in the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events as Dr. Georgina Orwell and on the show Six Feet Under as Carol Ward. O’Hara grew up in Etobicoke, a Toronto suburb, in a large family that valued levity above all else. O’Hara worked as a waitress at the Second City Theatre in Toronto after high school, where she saw improv shows. When Gilda Radner left the show in 1974, she promoted her as an understudy and hired her as a full-time employee. O’Hara was a member of the group when it started the sketch comedy TV show SCTV in 1976.

When it came to celebrity impersonations and fictional creations, she was well-known for both. After a brief stint on Saturday Night Live, O’Hara returned to SCTV in 1981 when it was picked up for a late-night slot on American television.

She was honored with an Emmy in 1982 for her work on SCTV. She appeared in a few more TV shows and films before tackling the role for which she is perhaps best known: that of the mother in the classic comedy Home Alone who inadvertently abandons one of her children (1990).

In-Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, she reprised her role (1992). In 2017, O’Hara was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2020 she was awarded the Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award for the Arts for her contributions to Canadian culture.
