Yvette Marie Stevens, better known as Chaka Khan, was born on March 23, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois. Khan first burst onto the music scene in the 1970s, known for her strong voice, large volume of curly hair, and charismatic stage presence. When she was 11 years old, she formed her first band, the Crystalettes, with her sister Yvonne. Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight are two of Khan’s early musical heroines. The sisters later became involved with the Afro-Arts Theater and formed the Shades of Black, a musical group.

Khan became involved in the Black power movement in 1969, joining the Black Panther Party and assisting with the organization’s free breakfast programme for kids. She changed her name to Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi around this time. She also dropped out of high school, putting an end to her formal education.

Khan formed the band Rufus, which had a heavy R&B and funk sound, in the early 1970s after playing with a few other groups. When the group’s self-titled debut album was released in 1973, it gave the world its first taste of Khan’s powerful vocals, with modest hits like “Whoever’s Thrilling You” and “Feel Good.”
Rags to Rufus (1974), the follow-up album, was a commercial and critical success. The hit single “Tell Me Something Good,” written by Stevie Wonder for the band, has sold over a million copies. For the album, the group won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus.

Rufus, which was later renamed Rufus featuring Chaka Khan and then Rufus & Chaka Khan, had a string of hits in the following years. With the upbeat “If You Get Started,” the band scored a Top 10 pop hit, and Khan assisted in the writing of the single “Sweet Thing,” which reached the top of the R&B charts and was also a Top 5 pop hit. Later hits included “Hollywood,” an introspective ballad about the dangers of the famous locale, as well as the upbeat “Do You Love What You Feel” and the straightforward “Ain’t Nobody.”
Khan debuted as a solo artist in the late 1970s, after recording with Rufus until the early 1980s. In 1978, she released Chaka, which featured Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson’s “I’m Every Woman,” a No. 1 R&B hit and empowerment anthem. The famous singles “Clouds,” written by Ashford and Simpson, and “Papillon (aka Hot Butterfly)” appeared on Khan’s second solo album, Naughty, released in 1980. In a strange coincidence, she received two Grammy Awards in 1983, one as a solo artist and the other as a member of Rufus.

The next year, however, Chaka the solo artist triumphed. With “I Feel for You,” a Top 5 smash, she made big moves on the charts by covering a Prince hit. The contagious track combined elements of rap, R&B, and electronic dance music, and featured one of the most prominent rap cameos of all time by Melle Mel. In 1984, it also earned Khan another Grammy Award. “This Is My Night” and “Through the Fire” are among the album’s other hits.
Khan established herself as a consistent presence on the R&B charts throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, with Top 20 hits like “What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me,” “Got to Be There,” “(Krush Groove) Can’t Stop the Street,” “It’s My Party,” “Love You All My Lifetime,” and “You Can Make the Story Right.”

Khan’s albums’ success waned over time as musical tastes changed, but she continued to produce critically acclaimed music. She won another Grammy in 1990 for her duet with Ray Charles on Quincy Jones’ 1989 Back on the Block album’s “I’ll Be Good to You,” and another in 1992 for The Woman I Am. Khan is also known for her contributions to the soundtracks of the 1995 films Clockers and Waiting to Exhale. Later in the decade, she released the well-received Come 2 My House album, which was produced by Prince (1998).

Chaka Khan won her eighth Grammy Award in 2002 for her collaboration with the Funk Brothers on a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” In 2004, she released ClassiKhan, an album of standards with the London Symphony Orchestra, as part of her experimentation with various musical styles.

Chaka Khan, also known as the Queen of Funk, is a recording artist from the United States. She has won ten Grammy Awards over the course of her career, which has spanned more than five decades. Billboard magazine has also called her the 65th most influential dance artist of all time. Her grandmother introduced her to jazz when she was a child in Chicago, Illinois. She used to play with a variety of bands early on in her career. She later became a member of the Rufus tribe.

She debuted as a solo artist a few years later, releasing her first self-titled album. Over the years, she released many more albums, including ‘Echoes of an Age,’ ‘The Woman I Am,’ and ‘Funk This.’ She is well-known for her charitable works in addition to her musical contributions.
