Cody Jinks abandoned his thrash metal roots to become a popular outlaw in the country music scene. Before his 2016 self-released sixth album, I’m Not the Devil, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard country charts, he had a string of successful independent albums in the early 2010s. Music by Cody Jinks is reminiscent of outlaw country and Southern rock, two of the most enduring musical genres of all time. The Texas native’s recent fame led to a recording contract with Rounder Records, and he debuted on the company that year with the album Lifers, which showcased his soft baritone and lonely, dark-hued country ballads.

His indie label released After the Fire and The Wanting the next year, and in 2021, he released Mercy. Jinks spent his early career as the lead singer of the Fort Worth-based thrash metal band Unchecked Aggression. He grew up in Haltom City. Jinks is a native of Haltom City who, in the late aughts, remade himself as a honky tonk balladeer, returning to his country origins. Jinks has released several independent albums, the first of which being 2010’s Less Wise. He and his backing band, the Tone Deaf Hippies, have done a lot of touring.

The first taste of mainstream success came with the 2015 album Adobe Sessions, named for the Adobe Room at the Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo, Texas, where the album was produced. As a result of the album’s success, Jinks received greater attention from the mainstream music industry. It peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.

The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard Country Albums chart upon its initial release in August of 2016. In 2017, Jinks re-released Less Wise (Modified), a remixed and remastered version of his 2010 debut album, filling the void in his career while he worked on his next album.

In the spring of 2018, it was announced that he had signed a contract with Rounder Records, and his entire back catalog would be reissued by Thirty Tigers. The arrival of spring can be credited with the arrival of this news. Released in June of that year, Lifers was Jinks’ first album for Rounder Records. Must Be the Whiskey was a big smash and helped promote the record. The band Lifers debuted at number two on the country charts and at number eleven on the Billboard 200. Jinks returned in 2019 with the release of two albums on his own record label, Cody Jinks Music: After the Fire and The Wanting. Unplugged, including only acoustic instruments, he released the original Adobe Sessions CD in 2021.

2016: I Am Not the Devil. Released on 12 August 2016, I’m Not the Devil is a studio album by the same name. Sonic Ranch, located in the vicinity of Tornillo, Texas, was the site of the album’s recording sessions. There is a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Way I Am” on the CD. Jinks covered Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” in January 2017 and it became a massive hit.
