Conrad Sangma is the new Chief Minister of Meghalaya and the state’s 12th chief minister. After his father, former Chief Minister P. A. Sangma, died in 2016, he assumed the presidency of the National People’s Party. He also served as a Tura Member of Parliament.
Conrad Sangma was born in Tura, Meghalaya, on January 27, 1978. Purno Sangma is a former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and Soradini, a housewife, were his parents. Conrad attended the St. Columba’s School. He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in entrepreneurial management before going on to Imperial College London for his MBA in finance.
Sangma married doctor Mehtab Chandee on May 29, 2009, and they have two daughters: Amara and the second. Apart from politics, Sangma has been involved in social work as the president of the PA Sangma Foundation, which works to improve education and the environment, as well as running four rural Meghalaya colleges. He is also the President of Meghalaya Cricket Association and Sports Academy.
Sangma got his start in politics as a campaign manager for his father, P. Sangma, in the late 1990s. Nationalist Congress Party candidate A. Sangma (NCP). In 2004, he ran for the first time and lost by 182. In the 2008 state elections, he and his brother James were both elected to the State Assembly as NCP members, and he later held several significant portfolios in the state cabinet, including Finance, Power, Tourism, GAD, and IT, and submitted his first annual budget for Meghalaya within 10 days of taking office.
Sangma’s party, the NPP, finished second in the 2018 Meghalaya legislative assembly election, securing 19 seats behind the Indian National Congress. The NPP allied with other regional parties to raise the number of seats required to form a government in the Province, increasing the total to 34.
Sangma then staked a claim to form government after meeting with Governor of Meghalaya Ganga Prasad and presenting him with a letter of support from 34 members of the legislative assembly, including 19 from the National People’s Party, six from the United Democratic Party, four from the People’s Democratic Front, two each from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, and an independent, and was declared the Chin State People’s Democratic Party.
