Cory Gardner, full name Cory Scott Gardner, is an American politician who served in the United States Senate from 2015 to 2021. He was born on August 22, 1974, in Yuma, Colorado. Gardner formerly served in the United States House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015.

Gardner was born in Yuma, Colorado, an agricultural community in the state’s northeastern corner, where his family had a farm machinery company. He obtained a law degree from the University of Colorado in 2001 after graduating with a degree in political science from Colorado State University in 1997.

Gardner went on to work for the National Corn Growers Association in Washington, D.C. as a spokeswoman. In 2002, he began his political career as legal counsel to U.S. Senator Wayne Allard, subsequently becoming his legislative director. Gardner was appointed to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2005, and the following year he was elected to a full term. He advocated for limited government and low taxes, and he was particularly interested in energy laws, focusing on both renewable and conventional resources. Gardner was the minority whip from 2007 to 2011.

Gardner was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2010. He fought federal authorities like the Environmental Protection Agency after taking office the following year, advocating for measures that would promote energy development. He ran for the United States Senate in 2014 against incumbent Democrat Mark Udall on a conservative platform, however he made concessions on issues like same-sex marriage, which he opposed but believed should be decided by the courts. Gardner won the election by a razor-thin margin, and he assumed office in 2015. The next year, he expressed lukewarm support for Donald Trump, the Republican presidential contender. Gardner, on the other hand, endorsed several of Trump’s initiatives after the election.
