The Expanse (2015), Nikita (2010), and Taken (2013) are among the many films in which Cyrus Aazam has appeared (2017). Cyrus the Great, sometimes known as Cyrus II, was a Persian conqueror and the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, which included Persia and the Near East from the Aegean Sea eastward to the Indus River.

According to historians, Cyrus was born sometime between the years 590 and 580 BCE in either Media or Persis (modern-day Fr’s Province in Iran). It’s unclear what his name meant when he became a ruler; it may have been a personal name or a throne name. However, the name does not appear in Iranian texts after the Achaemenid empire, which suggests the name had a particular meaning.

Though there is some debate among historians, the general consensus is that Cyrus was at least the second ruler of Persia by that name. An ancient Akkadian cuneiform tablet from Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) claims he was the Herodotus, a Greek historian, is the most reliable source for information on his life. Rather than a historical treatise, Xenophon’s idealized biography is a work of edification for Greeks on the ideal ruler. The fact that the Greeks and others held Cyrus in such high regard shows how well regarded he was not only by the Persians. While Cyrus was revered by the Persians, the Achaemenians did not think much of their following kings, according to Herodotus. As recorded by Herodotus and echoed by Xenophon, Cyrus’ boyhood story is known as the Cyrus legend because it clearly follows a pattern of folk beliefs about the dynasty’s founder’s near-superhuman qualities.

Throughout Iranian history, people have held similar ideas about the founders of succeeding dynasties. Astyages, king of the Medes and ruler of the Persians, is said to have married his daughter to Cambyses, a prince of Persis, his subordinate in Persis. Cyrus was the offspring of this union. Cyrus was born. Astyages, who had a vision of the baby as an adult plotting his downfall, had Cyrus killed on the spot. Instead, his chief adviser handed the child over to a shepherd, who raised it as his own. Cyrus was discovered by Astyages at the age of ten because to his exceptional qualities, and despite his nightmare, he agreed to let him live. When Cyrus was a man in Persia, he rose up against his maternal grandfather and overlord and declared independence. Cyrus captured Astyages after his army deserted him in 550 BCE while he was on the offensive against the insurgents.

Cyrus had to first cement his control over Iranian tribes on the Iranian plateau before expanding his dominion westward after inheriting the Medes’ realm. When Croesus, the king of Lydia in Asia Minor (Anatolia), learned of Astyages’ demise, Cyrus the Great, the Median ruler’s successor, marched against Lydia. Cyrus took the Lydian capital of Sardis as a prisoner in 547 or 546 and executed or burned to death Croesus; according to some accounts, he was well-treated while in Cyrus’ prisoner’s care. The Lydian king’s vassals, the Ionian Greek cities on the Aegean Sea coast, were now under Cyrus’ control and most of them surrendered after brief sieges.

Several Greek city revolts were later brutally put down. After that, Cyrus went to Babylonia, where the people had become tired of Nabonidus’ tyranny and Cyrus used this as an excuse to invade the lowlands. Since even the priests of Marduk, Babylon’s national deity, had become estranged from Nabonidus, the conquest happened quickly. The Persians conquered ancient Athens in 539 BCE, and it was the largest metropolis in the ancient world at the time.

One of Cyrus’ most well-known deeds is being credited with letting the Jewish exiles in Babylonia to return to their homes (see Ezra 1:1-4). The Persian emperor Cyrus was extremely tolerant of various cultures, including the Babylonians. He was able to get along with the locals by respecting their traditions and even making sacrifices to their gods. With the fall of Babylon, Cyrus gained control of not just Mesopotamia but also Syria and Palestine, which the Babylonians had previously annexed. When Cyrus went to war against Croesus, the ruler of Cilicia in Asia Minor became an ally, and Cilicia was given special status within Cyrus’s empire. As a result, he built the largest empire in history through diplomacy and military might.

Cyrus appears to have had a slew of different capitals throughout his reign. Ecbatana, the current city of Hamadan, was the Medes’ ancient capital, as was Pasargadae in Persis, the new capital of the empire, which was built on the place where Cyrus had defeated Astyages in battle. Even though there are just a few ruins left, they are impressive to anyone who sees them. As a result, Cyrus continued to use Babylon as his winter residence.
