The Lydian king’s vassals, the Ionian Greek cities on the Aegean Sea coast, were now under Cyrus’ control and most of them surrendered after brief sieges.

Several Greek city revolts were later brutally put down. After that, Cyrus went to Babylonia, where the people had become tired of Nabonidus’ tyranny and Cyrus used this as an excuse to invade the lowlands. Since even the priests of Marduk, Babylon’s national deity, had become estranged from Nabonidus, the conquest happened quickly. The Persians conquered ancient Athens in 539 BCE, and it was the largest metropolis in the ancient world at the time.
