Sean Love Combs (born November 4, 1969) is an American rapper, record producer, record executive, and entrepreneur who goes by the stage names Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, or Diddy. He served as a talent director at Uptown Records before establishing his own record label, Bad Boy Records, in 1993. He was born in New York City and raised in the suburb of Mount Vernon. Since then, Combs has helped to develop and create artists like The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Usher.

Combs founded the musical group Dirty Money in 2009, and their album Last Train to Paris was critically and commercially successful (2010).

Combs is the founder of MTV’s Making the Band and has received three Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards. Forbes estimated his net worth to be $740 million in 2019.

After being fired from Uptown in 1993, Combs focused his efforts on his own label, Bad Boy Entertainment. He soon met and befriended Christopher Wallace, also known as Biggie Smalls and the Notorious B.I.G., a street hustler who rapped as Biggie Smalls and registered as the Notorious B.I.G. Wallace was a rising rap star by 1994, and Combs had signed a $15 million deal to move Bad Boy to Arista Records, earning him a growing reputation as a rap impresario and entrepreneur in the industry. The Grammy-winning song “I’ll Be Missing You,” a musical eulogy featuring the voice of Wallace’s wife and the melody from the Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” was included on Combs’s first album, No Way Out, released that summer under the pseudonym Puff Daddy. In 1997, even more songs from No Way Out topped the music charts. In 1998, Combs continued to tour in support of No Way Out and remained active on the radio; for the film Godzilla, he recruited guitarist Jimmy Page to write the song “Come with Me,” a thunderous reworking of Page’s Led Zeppelin song “Kashmir.” Combs won two Grammy Awards that year for rap album (No Way Out) and rap performance (“I’ll Be Missing You”), as well as launching the Sean John clothing line.

However, Combs’ musical and fashion accomplishments were quickly overshadowed by legal issues. He was held partly responsible for the City College stampede in 1999 and ordered to pay settlements on multiple lawsuits that resulted. After an altercation with a record label executive later that year, he pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment, and in December 1999, he was present during a shooting at a Manhattan nightclub. In 2001, he was cleared of all charges against him, including unlawful gun possession. After taking the stage name P. Diddy and releasing his second album, The Saga Continues, he made a symbolic break from his past (2001).

Last Train to Paris, which he released with the female vocal group Dirty Money in 2010, continued in the successful vein of his previous albums. It combined rap with house and disco beats to produce a set of danceable tracks loosely themed around a snubbed love affair. On another collaborative album, 11 11 (2014), produced by Israeli techno producer Guy Gerber, Combs continued to experiment, but with the mixtape MMM, he returned to true hip-hop style (2015). A variety of collaborations were featured on the mixtape, which was made available for free online under the name Puff Daddy.

Combs did some acting in addition to his music career. In the critically acclaimed Monster’s Ball, he played a death row prisoner. In the comedy Get Him to the Greek (2010), he played a record executive, and in the football drama Draft Day, he played a sports agent (2014). His television credits include a 2008 adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, as well as guest appearances on a variety of series. He was an adviser on the vocal-competition show The Voice in 2016. After that, he served as a judge on The Four: Fight for Stardom, which ran for two seasons in 2018.
