Diplo was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on November 10, 1978, to Barbara Jean and Thomas Pentz. He has German and English ancestors.

His production style was shaped in part by the influence of home-grown rap. He spent much of his childhood in Miami, where he developed a taste for the distinctive Miami bass. In 1997, he enrolled at the University of Central Florida. He worked as a DJ at local radio station WPRK, the Rollins College radio station, during his time at UCF. He relocated to Philadelphia to pursue his studies at Temple University, where he rose to prominence as a DJ. After running into fellow DJ Low Budget on a regular basis, the two started throwing parties under the Hooked on Hollertronix name in 2003 to keep hold of what they could play during DJ gigs in Philadelphia. Because of the popularity of these groups, the two were able to release mixtapes, both individually and together, which received critical acclaim around the globe.

On his solo debut, Florida, released on the Ninja Tune label Big Dada Records, Diplo emphasised the club aesthetic of his Hollertronix songs in favour of a more reflective sound. Florida was released twice, the first as a CD and the second as a CD and DVD. System D-128, another artist who has worked with Diplo on audio and video projects, created the DVD. Prior to the release of Florida’s DVD, Money Studies released Diplo: “Banned in Libya,” which was the first label to release a solo project by Diplo under his original DJ name Diplodocus. It was a 45 rpm record named “Thingamajawn,” for which System D-128 directed a music video. “Banned in Libya,” like the Florida DVD, is an experimental audio and video combination of Diplo’s original music mixed with a variety of other unspecified outlets. His unique fondness for a genre of music known as baile funk, or favela funk, spawned a series of mixtapes (Favela on Blast, Favela Strikes Back) that served to introduce the Brazilian ghetto dance music to the United States.

Diplo designed “The Mausoleum,” a video studio, recording studio, record label office, gallery, and event space in Philadelphia, with this purpose in mind. Since its inception, The Mausoleum has hosted concerts by Glass Candy, Skream, Boys Noize, Nicos Gun, and others, as well as recordings by Christina Aguilera, Shakira, M.I.A., Santigold, Spank Rock, Plastic Little, Blaqstarr, and Paper Route Gangstaz.

M.I.A. approached Diplo while DJing at the Fabric Club in London in 2004 after hearing one of his tracks. As she entered the bar, Diplo was playing her songs “Galang” and “Fire Fire,” which he had obtained from an i-D magazine employee. Apart from the fact that I’m a white guy from Florida and she’s a Sri Lankan girl from England, everything else was the same: [We were both] film graduates, [listened to] all the same music as teenagers, and we’re both moving in the same musical direction right now, it was incredible… I’d always tried to make a beat with her, but all of my beats at the time were really bad.” After that, the two collaborated on a mixtape, Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1, in which Arular’s track acapellas were mixed with songs by other musicians. The New York Times and Pitchfork Media named it one of their “Albums of the Year.” Following the publication, the two continued to collaborate. He was the tour DJ for her Arular Tour in 2005.

Diplo continued to collaborate with M.I.A. and met London DJ Switch via her. They collaborated on the Grammy-nominated song “Paper Planes,” which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. M.I.A said in a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone that Diplo resented her rise to fame in 2005, that he tried to hold her back, and that he argued with her over her performance.

Diplo’s first full-length collaboration was with Switch, who went by the moniker Major Lazer. In the high-tech eclecticism of his productions, Diplo combines such diverse influences as Miami Bass and Baile Funk. Diplo and Switch set out for Jamaica to record a project that, like most of Diplo’s previous ventures, would showcase little-known subgenres, this time of Jamaica’s dancehall scene, after landing a contract with Downtown Records before even recording a note of music. Many well-known Jamaican musicians, including Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man, and Ms. Thing, lent their support to the project, which resulted in the album Guns Don’t Kill People… Santigold, Amanda Blank, Nina Sky, Ricky Blaze, and others contributed vocals to Lazers Do. Diplo characterised the dancehall sound as “the end of the planet, all the little influences—house, soca, oldies, R&B, jazz—it all ends up in Jamaica” while discussing the Major Lazer project. For Beyoncé’s single “Run the World (Girls),” the track “Pon De Floor” from Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do was sampled.

Major Lazer followed up their debut album with an EP called Lazers Never Die, which was released in 2010. DJs Jillionaire and Walshy Fire replaced Switch when he quit Major Lazer in 2011. Free the Universe, the second album, was supposed to be released in November 2012, but it was pushed back to February 2013, and then to April 15. Ezra Koenig, Bruno Mars, Ward 21, Wyclef, The Partysquad, Shaggy, Tyga, Flux Pavilion, and Wynter Gordon are among the artists included. Diplo announced details of the third Major Lazer album during the Grammy Awards ceremony on February 8, 2015. He announced that Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and Pusha T will all be featured on the song. Peace Is the Mission is the name of the project. “Lean On,” the first single, is a collaboration with French producer DJ Snake and features vocals by Danish recording artist M. On June 1, 2015, the album’s second single, “Strong,” featuring Ellie Goulding and Tarrus Riley, was released simultaneously with the album. With over 800 million views to date, “Lean On” became Spotify’s Most Streamed Song of All Time on November 11, 2015. The official video for “Lean On” became one of the most watched videos on YouTube, in addition to the streaming title. It has received over 2 billion views so far. “Lean On” will go on to reach double platinum status, in addition to the streaming and viewing milestones.

On July 22, 2016, the band released the single “Cold Water,” a collaboration with Justin Bieber of Canada and M of Denmark. The song has already surpassed 200 million Spotify streams and enjoyed international commercial success, reaching number one in a number of countries. Major Lazer and Bad Royale released “Bad Royale” on November 29, 2016 “”54-46” is sampled in “My Number.” That’s My Number” is a “genre-defining classic from legendary ska/reggae collective Toots and the Maytals,” according to Pitchfork.” This album featured newly recorded vocals from frontman Toots Hibbert, which were created specially for Major Lazer and adapted the original lyrics to integrate the band into the song while maintaining the original melody.
