BYJU’S, co-founder and teacher Divya Gokulnath, is a living example. A doctor’s daughter, her passion of learning began early and inspired her to follow science and math. Her parents always encouraged her to dream big and her faith in her provided her strength to bravely pursue her objectives. She was a young teacher and felt so in love with the job that she gave up admission to institutions in the United States for further education and instead stayed back in order to help her pupils make their dreams come true. The rest is history, as they say.

Divya and Byju Raveendran fell in love and began a new life together, but not simply a new business: BYJU’S—The Learning App. The trip was quite rewarding with an astonishing 70 million pupils registered in the app. BYJU’S also came to expand in a number of rounds of financing. I heard of a friend’s Byju (Raveendran) sessions while studying for competitive examinations for the first time. I was mesmerised by his approach to teaching along with the rest of my batch. As I waited for my findings, I had the chance to take my first class for BYJU’S students. At the time, I was 21, but I realised immediately that I was passionate about teaching, and I was quite satisfied. At that time, my results were revealed and I had cracked admission to a few universities in the United States, but I decided to keep teaching. And since then, nobody has looked back. Truth be told, teaching, for me was also an enormously fulfilling mental and emotional experience.

I began teaching when I was twenty-one. My students were in the same age bracket or a little younger. I used to wear saris to look a bit older (smiles). Best thing is, it gave me a head start because I realised my passion for teaching early on; I haven’t looked back ever since. For me, teaching is a worthwhile experience since I can connect with students.

The learning journey of each kid is distinct and different. Not every kid might feel linked to a specific subject. When I started teaching, I saw that it was possible to strengthen the method of learning — it was a matter of urgency to transition from fear-or-examen-based learning to love-based learning, to something that feed a learner’s curiosity. The more I interacted with the pupils, the more I knew that for each student we needed to tailor our approach. And hence, since the app was launched at BYJU’S, we have always focused our product on students’ needs. The single-size method does not work if you want children to be active and to learn for a lifetime.

My fellow teachers and I understand that we know that in order to make students love to learn, we must explain concepts contextually and visually using examples of the real world and have these provided by the best of the teachers, so that the learning process is engaging and fulfilling. We really believe that our next generation should be taught “how to study,” not “what to learn.” We should encourage children to ask why and not just feed them spoonfully to answer inquiries. In fact, the World Economic Forum believes that 65% of today’s children will someday be employed in entirely new vocations, which are not yet defined. We must therefore prepare them for tomorrow’s unseen tasks, and this is only achievable if they are able to learn, unlearn and relearn.
