Dorothy Clark was born in Epping, Essex, and became famous in her late teens for posting about her life on social media and acting and performing. One of the things Clark did that led to her being known as Dodie was writing songs about love, loss, and longing. She used the baritone ukulele a lot and wrote songs about these things. Then, in 2016, she started working on her first EP, Intertwined. She quickly became a big name on the internet. In November, she released her own album. As her popularity grew, it reached the top 40 in the U.K. and Ireland, which led to live shows across the country.

Songwriter Jon “Paint” Cozart, Rusty Clanton, and Tess Violet were also on the Transatlantic Tour when they performed in the United States. In 2017, Dodie came back with her second EP, You. It had a more tender and somber sound than its predecessor, with resonant violas, thoughtful lyrics, and melancholy piano. It was because of these things that You came in at number five in Ireland, number six in the UK, and number 17 in Australia. Dodie’s music evolved over the next two years with the release of soft, more introspective singles like “Human” and “If I’m Being Honest.” Both of these songs were on her 2019 EP Human. At the top of the UK album chart, the set reached number five.

Dodie’s full-length debut album, Build a Problem, came out in March 2021. It was made by Joe Rubel, who worked with Ed Sheeran, Maisie Peters, and Pomplamoose. In Scotland, “Boys Like You” made it into the top 100. It was the culmination of almost a decade of writing music. To help with the release, Dodie came back to her daily vlog after a five-month break. She was born as Dorothy Gladys Smith in Lancashire and grew up in the Manchester area of the country (her memoir is titled “A Childhood in Manchester”). Infancy: Her father died when she was just a few months old. She didn’t have a father until she was 14 when her mother married again and moved to London.

There, she went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and tried to be an actress, but not very well. Finally, she got a job at a furniture store as a toy buyer to make ends meet. With her acting dreams over, she turned to write plays. In 1931 her first play, “Autumn Crocus,” came out (under the pseudonym “C.L. Anthony”). It was a success, and her story of how she went from being an actress to working at a furniture store to becoming a successful writer caught the public’s attention. She was featured in newspapers all over the country. In spite of her newfound wealth, she didn’t get caught up in the “literary” scene. She married a man who worked at the furniture store with her.

It was during World War II that she and her husband moved to the United States because of her husband’s stand as a conscientious objector, as well as the social and legal issues that came with it. She still misses her home country, though (1948). During her time there, she made close friends with authors like Christopher Isherwood and John Van Druten and was helped with her writing by A.J. Cronin.
