Dorothy Hamill was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 26, 1956, to Chalmers and Carol Hamill. Her father was a mechanical engineer with a reputation for binge drinking. Her family relocated to the Riverside neighbourhood of Greenwich, Connecticut, shortly after she was born, where she grew up. With an older brother and sister, she was a bashful youngster. At a young age, she learned to skate with her siblings on her grandparents’ pond.

Her parents saw her potential and enabled her to start taking lessons at the age of eight to help her develop her skating technique, which included skating backwards. Despite not being close to her mother and having a strained relationship with her parents, she was able to achieve this. She took her sport seriously and began practising every morning at 4:30 a.m.

In order to pass her preliminary and first figure skating exam. Her father spent a lot of money on her education.
Otto Gold and Gustave Lussi were her initial coaches. She eventually trained at the Sky Rink in New York City due to a lack of ice time in her neighbourhood. She also received training at Lake Placid, New York, and Toronto, Canada.
She went to Riverside public school until the spring of 1970, when she transferred to a tiny school with flexible schedules to meet her skating schedule.

Finally, she received her high school diploma from Colorado Academy.Hamill’s first national win occurred when she was 12 years old and won the novice ladies’ championship at the US Championship in 1969. Later that spring, she was asked to perform at Madison Square Garden as part of an exhibition tour dubbed ‘Champions on Ice.’She finished second in the US junior championship in 1970 and made her senior debut in 1971.

From 1974 through 1976, she was the US champion. When she began competing internationally, the US Figure Skating Association recognised her talent and arranged for her to be trained by Carlo Fassi.Dorothy’s major break came in 1974, when she won silver in the World Championships in Munich, Germany. In 1975, she earned a second silver medal at the World Championships in Colorado Springs. She won the gold medal in the 1976 Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, at the age of 19.

She went on to win the World Championship title in Gothenburg, Sweden, shortly after, and subsequently turned professional. She was the last single skater without a triple leap to win an Olympic medal. She travelled widely with the play ‘Ice Capades’ from 1977 to 1984. Her own travelling shows, such as ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Nutcracker,’ she also produced and performed in.She and her husband, Kenneth Forsythe, purchased the firm that ran ‘Ice Capades’ in 1993 when it was in financial trouble.

However, they were declared bankrupt and the company was sold to Pat Robertson’s company, ‘International Family Entertainment.’ She continues to skate on television shows, including ‘Broadway on Ice,’ where she is a frequent performer. At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was chosen to carry the torch into the Olympic Stadium. In 2006, she made her television debut as a judge on the show ‘Skating with Celebrities,’ and in 2007.

She was a special guest at AT&T Park in San Francisco for the Brian Boitano-Barry Manilow skating spectacular. Cindy Crawford and Karyn Bryant produced an infomercial for Cindy’s ‘Meaningful Beauty’ anti-aging skin care system, in which she also starred (2007). She competed in ABC’s iconic dancing programme ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2013, alongside country singer Wynonna Judd, comedian DL Hughley.

Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, and other celebrities. Due to a back ailment, she was forced to quit from the competition after only two dances.’On and Off the Ice,’ her first book, was published in 1983.Dorothy Hamill’s autobiography, ‘A Skating Life: My Story,’ was released in 2007.She also appeared in the films ‘The Dorothy Hamill Special,’ ‘Dorothy Hamill Presents Winners,’ and ‘A Tribute to George and Ira Gershwin: A Memory of All That,’ all of which she directed (1998).

In 1968-69, she won the U.S. Event in the Novice category, and in 1969-70, she finished second in the junior level of the same championship. From 1974 through 1976, she was the three-time United States National Champion.Dorothy’s first international championships were the Nebelhorn Trophy and the St. Gervais Trophy, which she won in 1971-1972. She also took first position and was awarded the Richmond Trophy for the years 1972-1973.

She won the Winter Olympic Gold Medal in Austria in 1976, as well as the World Championship in Ladies Singles in Sweden the same year. Her original manoeuvres, known as the ‘Hamill Camel,’ are ascribed to her.She was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame and then the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1991 and 2000, respectively, and her birthplace of Greenwich, Connecticut has a skating rink named after her.

Among his numerous honours, the Boys Scouts of America’s National Young American Award (1976), the Daytime Emmy Award (1983), and the Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award in 1996 stand out. Dorothy Hamill was twice married and divorced. Her first marriage, to Dean Paul Martin, lasted from 1982 to 1984, and her second marriage, to Kenneth Forsythe, lasted from 1987 to 1995.

In 2009, she married John MacColl for the third time. From her second marriage, she had a daughter, Alexandra, with whom she resided in Baltimore, Maryland for a while. She had been depressed for most of her adult life and was receiving medical therapy for it. In 2008, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo treatment. Her daughter has also been diagnosed with depression.

She let out her emotions at the 1974 Munich World Championships, when she ran off the rink and sobbed because the audience booed the previous performer’s marks while she was already on the ice and ready to skate. She did, however, comeback later and win the silver medal. While practising in Denver a month before the 1975 US Championship, she had a torn hamstring, which was later diagnosed as a pulled ligament.

She competed in the competition despite the injury and insisted she was OK.She was dissatisfied with her performance at the 1976 US Championship, admitting that Linda Fratianne outperformed her, which she blamed to her lack of preparation. Carlo Fassi, her coach, withdrew immediately after the competition to join his other favourite star, John Carry, leaving Hamill without a coach just weeks before the Olympics.

He just came back for a short time to coach her in Germany before the games. Her large glasses and bobbed haircut became her signature look. Each of these events set off a fashion trend, earning her the moniker “America’s Sweetheart” from the press. In a nationwide sports poll conducted by the Associated Press in 1993, she was statistically tied for first place with fellow Olympian Mary Lou Retton as America’s most popular athlete, much ahead of Michael Jordan, Tory Aikman, and Joe Montana.
