Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, better known as Earl Sweatshirt, is a famous American rapper and record producer. A native American, he was born in the USA. In 2010, at the tender age of 16, he released his first mixtape, titled Earl. Rape and murder were among the explicit issues addressed in the mixtape. This resulted in a flurry of news articles regarding the topic. Before he got renowned, he made his songs available to the public through his Myspace profile.  He was a founding member of the hip-hop group Odd Future with Tyler the Creator before he left for boarding school. This prevented him from making new music for over two years.

He returned to the collective after completing his boarding school term in order to resume his musical pursuits. His debut studio album, titled “Doris,” came out in 2013 to widespread critical acclaim. I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside: An Album by Earl Sweatshirt was published in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim and overwhelming fan support from Earl Sweatshirt’s legion of devoted listeners. In addition to being signed to Columbia Records, he also has his own indie label, Tan Cressida. On February 24, 1994, Thebe Neruda Kgositsile entered the world in the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Cheryl Harris, teaches law at UC Los Angeles, and his father, Keorapetse Kgositsile, is a poet and political activist in South Africa. He has South African ancestry.

A young Thebe, then eight years old, saw his parents’ divorce. His dad fought illness for a short time before passing away in 2018. A couple of Thebe’s earlier educational stops include the “UCLA Lab School” in Los Angeles and the “New Roads High School” in Santa Monica. He began his career as a rap artist when he was just eight years old. He created a MySpace account in 2008 and by that year had posted his first song collection. The songs first appeared on his mixtape titled “Kitchen Cutlery.” Sly Tendencies was the name under which he released his albums. He and his two other close friends, Loof and Jaw Mojo, formed a group they called “The Backpackers.”

They had planned to release a mixtape under the moniker “World Playground,” but the group finally disbanded and went in separate paths. Back then, Thebe was just getting started in what would become a fruitful and lengthy rapping career. It was in 2009 when “Tyler the Creator” first heard about “Sly Tendencies,” and it was he who suggested that the rapper join his hip hop collective, Odd Future. Tyler contacted ‘Syl after hearing some of his music posted on someone else’s Myspace channel.

He changed his name to Earl Sweatshirt after joining the band Odd Future. Furthermore, he received coverage in periodicals such as “Spin,” “Billboard,” and “The Fader,” among others. His debut mixtape, Earl, was published in 2010 when he was 16 years old. Despite the band’s success, Earl had to take a break from recording songs with “Odd Future.”

With so much adult content, his mixtape soon rose to the top of the list of most challenging videos to sit through. This was probably a major role in his mom’s decision to forbid Earl to hang out with ‘Odd Future.’ She pressured him to enroll in Coral Reef Academy, a Samoan retreat school for troubled youth. Earl claimed in an interview that he was sent to Samoa because he had messed with the wrong crowd at school. While in school, Earl studied Manning Marable’s biography of Malcolm X and Richard Farina’s books on counterculture. More specifically, he wrote the words to the song “Oldie,” which was his single contribution to “The OF Tape Vol. 2.”

The members of “Odd Future” were busy creating headlines all over the world and changing into hip hop while Earl was away at boarding school. There were rumblings that Sweatshirt would return to the States in February of 2012. A video on “YouTube” hinted at future songs by Earl. In just three hours, Earl’s new music was fully released when he gained 50,000 additional “Twitter” followers demanding it.

The song “Home,” which clocks in at around a minute and a half long, concludes with the lyrics “and I am back, Bye.” The anticipated return of the fan-favorite rapper was assured. He was featured in numerous media outlets in 2012. It wasn’t until his single “Oldie” appeared on the debut album “The OF Tape, Vol. 2” that he was formally reinstated as a member of “Odd Future.” After returning from Samoa on November 2, he dropped his debut solo single. The name “Chum” was chosen for the record’s title. His first studio album, named Doris, was published on Columbia Records and his own imprint, Tan Cressida, on August 20, 2013. His first album was well welcomed by critics from outlets including “The Guardian” and “Los Angeles Times.”

It entered the US album charts at #5 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the US Top Rap Albums. He released many albums and singles in 2014, including ’45,’ ‘Quest/Power,’ ‘Vultures,’ and ‘Hell. I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside: An Album by Earl Sweatshirt was released digitally on March 22, 2015, and was Earl’s second studio album. On April 14, 2015, the hard copy was made available to the public. He dropped many songs in 2016 including “Wind in My Sails,” “Sort Sort,” “Barry,” “Death Whistles,” and “Pellicular.” In 2018, he was featured on “E Coli” off The Alchemist’s EP “Bread.” He was considered for inclusion on ‘XXL’s 2012 Freshmen List back in 2011. At the 2013 “MTVU Woodie Awards,” he took home the trophy for “Breaking Woodie.”

At the ‘2013 Grammy Awards,’ he was also nominated as a featured artist for his work on the album ‘Channel Orange. After much negotiation, Earl was able to secure a solo contract with Columbia in November 2012, releasing his debut single “Chum” on the major label’s vanity imprint Tan Cressida. Doris was released in August of 2013 and featured the singles “Whoa” and “Hive;” the former became Earl’s first charting solo hit and reached number 46 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

While Earl did contribute to the album’s creation of a sizeable percentage of the material, the album nonetheless debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. Numerous OF members worked on it to make it better; the Neptunes, Frank Ocean, and the RZA are just a few examples. Both Rolling Stone and The Wire, which compile annual best-of albums lists, placed it high on their respective lists.

In March of 2015, Earl released a follow-up LP titled I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside. Despite clocking in at less than half an hour, the record was hailed as a massive success due to its laudably secluded nature. Earl had previously worked with many other artists before releasing this album. The album reached at #12 on the Billboard 200, with Earl producing all but one of the songs. In the gaps between his solo albums, he made guest appearances on songs like Danny Brown’s “Really Doe” and expanded his producing resume with a number of one-offs in addition to his extensive work with Mach-Hommy and Denmark Vessey.

One of the songs on there was “Really Doe” by Danny Brown. Earl’s third studio album for Columbia, Some Rap Songs, came out in the fall of 2018. The album was published after the death of his father, South African poet and activist Keorapetse Kgositsile (aka Bra Willie). As 2019 drew to a close, he quickly returned with a new EP named Feet of Clay, which featured seven new tracks. Mavi, Mach-Hommy, and Liv.E. were just a few of the guests who made appearances on the compact compilation.

The contemplative “2010,” the lead single from Earl’s upcoming fourth studio album Sick!, was released two years later in 2012. The ten-song album came out in January 2022, and it featured appearances from Armand Hammer and Elopers, two well-known performers. Sound sculptors such as Navy Blue, Black Noise, Alexander Spit, and others contributed to the album’s creation. Sick! clocked in at under 24 minutes and continued Earl’s futuristic, at times chaotic, instrumental sound from his previous two albums.

The word “sick,” short for the band’s moniker, inspired the album’s name. On the day of its self-release, March 31, 2010, Earl was made available for free digital download on the Odd Future website. Tyler, The Creator did the bulk of the mixtape’s production. Earl was rated as the 24th best album of 2010 by the music publication Complex.
