Barrett, a rear admiral of the United States Coast Guard, rose through the ranks of the FBI and was present at the Pentagon during the September 11 attacks in 2001. Snowden’s father, Lonnie, was a Coast Guard lieutenant, and his mother, Elizabeth, works as a clerk in the United States.

Snowden and his family moved to Fort Meade, Maryland, in the early 1990s, while he was still in elementary school. He missed nearly nine months of high school due to mononucleosis. He completed the GED examination and enrolled at Anne Arundel Community College instead of going to school. Snowden studied online for a master’s degree at the University of Liverpool, England, in 2011, despite having no undergraduate college degree. He was fascinated with Japanese popular culture, had learned the language, and worked for an animation studio with a branch in the United States.

He also claimed to have a working knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and a strong interest in martial arts. On a military induction form when he was 20, he mentioned Buddhism as his faith, adding that the choice of agnostic was “strangely missing.” Snowden admitted to The Guardian in September 2019 that he married Lindsay Mills in a Moscow courtroom as part of interviews for the publication of his memoir Permanent Record. The couple is expecting a child in December 2020.

Snowden has stated that he voted for a third-party candidate in the 2008 presidential election despite “believing in Obama’s promises.” Following the presidency, he thought President Barack Obama was carrying on George W. Bush’s policies.

Interviewers observed that Snowden’s laptop had stickers promoting Internet rights groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the Tor Project, according to accounts released in June 2013.

Snowden enrolled in the US Army on May 7, 2004, and became a Special Forces recruit by the 18X enlistment option, feeling compelled to serve in the Iraq War to support marginalized citizens. Due to bilateral tibial stress fractures, he did not complete the preparation and was discharged on September 28, 2004.

Snowden then worked as a security guard at the University of Maryland’s Centre for Advanced Study of Language, a learning centre funded by the National Security Agency, for less than a year in 2005. (NSA). This is not a secret building, according to the university, although it is closely secured. Snowden told Wired in June 2014 that his work as a security guard demanded a high-level security clearance, which he obtained after passing a polygraph test and undergoing a thorough background check.

Snowden declined a career offer from the CIA after attending a job fair for intelligence agencies in 2006. At CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, he was assigned to the corporate relations group. Snowden was sent to the CIA’s underground school for technical experts after establishing himself as a junior employee on the top computing staff. He stayed in a hotel for six months while researching and training full-time.

Snowden was charged with two counts of violating the 1917 Espionage Act and stealing of government property by the US Department of Justice on June 21, 2013, and his passport was suspended by the Department of State. He flew into Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport two days later, where Russian officials discovered the canceled passport and detained him for over a month in the airport terminal. After that, Russia granted Snowden asylum and issued him a one-year residency visa, which was later extended several times. He was given permanent residence in Russia in October 2020.

Snowden was named president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation in early 2016, a nonprofit organization headquartered in San Francisco that works to shield journalists from hacking and government monitoring. He married Lindsay Mills in 2017. Permanent Record, his biography, was published on September 17, 2019. A federal court in the United States ruled on September 2, 2020, that the US intelligence community’s mass surveillance scheme uncovered by Edward Snowden was unlawful and potentially unconstitutional.
