Both her parents are connected to the film and television world. Her father is a filmmaker and director, her mother an actress who has made her mark in films and in the television industry.

Her younger sister Zooey Deschanel is also a renowned American singer and actress. Deschanel is a mixed French, Irish, Dutch, Swiss, and English ancestry.

She studied at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California, an independent co-educational preparatory day school. She also studied in a private preparatory college, K-12, located in Santa Monica, California, at Crossroads School.

She then attended Boston University, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater in the Professional Actor Training Program.She made her film debut in 1994 with the romantic American comic drama Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda, ‘It Could Happen To You.’ The film played Deschanel’s role as an animal rights activist.

In 2000, in her short film ‘It’s a Shame About Ray,’ she was playing ‘Maggie.’ The following year, she went on to try the role of ‘Maude Allyn’ in the television film ‘The Heart Department.’She then played “Pam Asbury,” a lecturer and Psychic TV host, in the TV miniseries “Red Rose” of Stephen King. In 2002, she appeared in three of her episodes.

She also showed ‘Cassie Germaine’ in the U.S. police crime-drama TV series ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2002. In the 17th episode of her third season, she played the role. In the drama series ‘Providence,’ she also played ‘Annie Franks’ in two episodes entitled ‘Cloak & Dagger’ and ‘The Eleventh Hour.’

‘Bones’ was created by Hart Hanson and was loosely based on American crime writer Kathy Reichs’s career and his novels. Deschanel, a smart forensic anthropologist and kinesiologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, played the role of the main protagonist. David Boreanaz, who played ‘FBI Agent Seeley Booth,’ has also starred in ‘Bones.’
