His father Jack Marshall was a musician and he was raised in Glendale, California. In 1966, his parents invited him to the daughter of legendary director John Ford’s birthday celebration, and that’s how he got his start in the film industry. They became friends and agreed to work on his debut picture, Targets (1968), which was later followed by The Last Picture Show (1971) and a number of additional projects with Peter Bogdanovich in the future.

Marshall began his film career as Peter Bogdanovich’s assistant. Marshall was swiftly elevated to the position of site manager on the classic film The Last Picture Show, under the direction of the director. The two subsequently maintained their collaboration as Marshall served as Bogdanovich’s associate producer on films including Paper Moon and Nickelodeon. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, the directors of the classic film Raiders of the Lost Ark, enlisted Marshall’s services in 1978.

Upon its initial release in 1981, the picture became a big international hit and earned nine Academy Award nominations. In the same year, Marshall and Spielberg formed Amblin Entertainment with future wife and colleague producer Kathleen Kennedy. They would go on to work together on such films as E.T.-The Extra-Terrestrial, Poltergeist, and The Goonies during the following decade, establishing one of the most successful collaborations in film history.

Thalberg Memorial Award, given to creative producers “whose body of work indicates a consistently high standard of motion film production,” was given to him and Kennedy in November 2018.

Aside from his filmography, he was a longtime member of the US Olympic Committee due to his passion for sports and philanthropy. Marshall received the Olympic Shield in 2005 for his contributions to the USOC and the Olympic movement, and he was inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame three years later. Also, he chairs the US Center for SafeSport and the Archer School for Girls’ boards of directors and sits on the boards of other humanitarian organizations, including Athletes for Hope and LA’s Promise Fund.

When Kathleen Kennedy became Chairman of Lucasfilm Ltd. in 2012, Marshall became the only principal of The Kennedy/Marshall Company.

Incorporated in 1922, the Marshall Chess Club has had its main office at 23 West 10th Street since 1931. Located on one of the city’s most picturesque blocks, the brownstone dates back to 1832. Frank Marshall turned 140 years old today, having been born on August 10th, 1877, in New York City. The family moved to Montreal, Canada, when Marshall was eight years old. When Frank was ten, his father, who was an excellent chess player, taught him the game. Marshall showed promise in the game, and as a result, the greatest chess players in the city invited him to the Hope Coffee House.

It was not long until he was beating the coffee-house players handily. Marshall describes this moment in his memoirs, Marshall’s Best Games of Chess.

Frank Marshall was Montreal’s greatest player by the age of 13, and he won the Montreal Chess Club Championship at the age of 15 with a perfect score. On a separate visit to Montreal in 1893, Frank Marshall joined William Steinitz (shown left) for a simultaneous lecture. With only 19 years old left, Marshall emigrated back to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. In Manhattan and Brooklyn, he joined the chess clubs and won the club championships at the age of 22 in both. Marshall’s journey to the 1899 London competition was made possible because of the combined efforts of the two clubs.
