That afternoon, this down-on-their-luck want tobe touring pros filmed their own version, uploaded it to YouTube, and promoted it on Twitter. When 100 people watched it, they decided to make another one. One thing led to another, and Bryan Bros. Golf turned into a mini-empire that spread trick-shot videos all over social media. Deals with big brands like Callaway, Lexus, Bose, GoPro, and many more came in. George realized how big the moment was one night at the PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, in January 2015. He sat down on a couch and said, “I can’t believe this is real.”

Keeping an eye on Joe Gilliland, a college friend of theirs from the University of South Carolina, was the CEO of Bryan Bros., even though he had his doubters. “I quit a good job in finance, and my parents didn’t understand why,” he says. My mom asked my dad all the time, “How is this a real job?”

Garrett Clark was a huge fan of the Bryan Bros. when he was a kid in Kansas City. Since he was nine years old, he had his own YouTube channel where he posted videos of himself “just doing stupid things around the house,” he says. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be a YouTuber.” Wes and George were able to follow their dreams of making it to the PGA Tour because of the success of Bryan Bros. When George came to Kansas City for a event, Garrett went looking for him. Wes joined the PGA Tour in 2016, and the next year he won at Hilton Head. Garrett didn’t ask about golf because he was more interested in other things.

Garrett was a good junior golfer and a talented scrambler. He once won a tournament with a final score of 68 even though he only hit two fairways. He spent the whole month of December 2016 working on his own trick shots and then started posting them to Instagram. He didn’t play in as many junior tournaments as usual the next summer. Instead, he spent his time making fun videos. His Instagram following started to grow. Garrett went to Kansas Community College to play golf on the team, but he felt stifled. He stopped making content because he had to spend so much time on boring things like schoolwork and team practice.

Garrett started making longer videos on YouTube again in the summer of 2019 after his freshman year. Garrett went to a thrift store and bought a golf bag and a set of irons for a total of $3.81. He then went out and played nine holes in four over par. The production quality of the videos is simple but clean, with some unexpected touches here and there. However, the most important thing is Garrett himself. He is a good-looking kid with a nice swing and a slightly goofy presence who, most importantly, never seems to be trying too hard.

By the end of the summer, 150,000 people were following Garrett’s GM Golf feed on YouTube. Money was coming in thanks to the magic of the YouTube algorithm, which puts ads in every video and pays the creators based on how many people watch the ads and how long they watch them for. Midway through the summer, Garrett worked up the courage to tell his father Jerry, a no-nonsense financial advisor, that he wanted to drop out of college and work full-time on creating content.

GM Golf has more than 33 million views and more than 200,000 subscribers. More than 230,000 people follow Garrett on Instagram between his two accounts. With such a large audience, advertisers and endorsement partners have reached out to the show to target young viewers. Jerry laughs and says, “Dollar Shave Club made a deal with Garrett even though he only shaves about once a month.” GM Golf is on Instagram, but that’s just to build their brand and send people to their YouTube channel. “The money is on YouTube,” says Gilliland, who started working for Garrett earlier this year.

A typical video with Garrett and his regulars, like his cousin Micah Morris and his friends Stephen Castaneda and Matt Scharff, is 30 to 40 minutes long. (Each has a YouTube channel that does well.) They could play a traditional match or a fancy game of HORSE, or they could play a round with only one club or with all of their clubheads wrapped in 100 layers of duct tape. Garrett often wears sweatpants, a t-shirt, and a cap that are turned backward. There are no bad words. (“We pay a lot of attention to protecting the brand,” Jerry says. “Sexy content might get you more views in the short term, but it will cost you partnerships in the long run.”
