General Bipin Rawat is an Indian Army four-star general. He served as India’s first and new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He was announced as India’s first CDS on December 30, 2019, and took office on January 1, 2020. Prior to becoming the CDS, he was the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Indian Army’s 26th Chief of Army Staff.

Rawat was born on 16 March 1958, in Saina Village, Birmoli, Lansdowne, Pauri, Pauri Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh, India. For many decades, the family had served in the Indian Army. His father, Lieutenant General Laxman Singh Rawat, was born in the village of Sainj in the Pauri Garhwal district. His mother was a native of Uttarkashi and the daughter of Kishan Singh Parmar, an ex-Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the district.

Rawat went to Dehradun’s Cambrian Hall School and Shimla’s St. Edward’s School. He then moved on to the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, where he won the “Sword of Honour.”

Rawat also attended the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington and the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he completed the Higher Command Course. He earned an MPhil in Defence Studies as well as a diploma in Management and Computer Studies from the University of Madras during his time at the DSSC. For his thesis on military-media strategic studies, he received a Doctorate in Philosophy from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut in 2011.

On December 16, 1978, Rawat was commissioned into the 5th battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles, the same unit as his father. He spent ten years performing counter-insurgency operations and has a lot of experience in high-altitude warfare.

As a Major, he commanded a company in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. He commanded the 5th battalion 11 Gorkha Rifles in the Eastern sector of the Line of Actual Control at Kibithu as a Colonel. He was promoted to Brigadier and commanded the Rashtriya Rifles’ 5 Sector in Sopore. He then led a multinational Brigade in a Chapter VII mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), earning the Force Commander’s Commendation twice.

After Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and General Dalbir Singh Suhag, he is the third Gorkha Brigade officer to become Chief of the Army Staff. General Rawat was inducted into the United States Army Command and General Staff College International Hall of Fame during his visit to the United States in 2019. He is also the Nepalese Army’s honorary General. The Indian and Nepali armies have a tradition of conferring the honorary rank of General on each other’s chiefs to signify their close and special military ties.

In June 2015, militants from the United Liberation Front of Western Southeast Asia (UNLFW) ambushed and killed eighteen Indian soldiers in Manipur. The Indian Army retaliated with cross-border strikes, with units from the 21st Parachute Regiment striking an NSCN-K base in Myanmar. The Dimapur-based III Corps, which was then commanded by Rawat, had operational control of 21 Para.
