Bill Denbrough creates a paper sailboat for Georgie, his six-year-old brother, in October 1988. Georgie sails the boat through the stormy streets of Derry, Maine, only for it to sink into a storm drain. Georgie notices a clown in the drain as he goes to rescue it. He introduces himself as “Pennywise the Dancing Clown.” Pennywise coaxes Georgie closer before biting off his arm and dragging him into the sewer. Bill and his buddies Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, and Stan Uris fell afoul of elder bully Henry Bowers and his group the next summer.

Bill, who is still plagued by Georgie’s disappearance, surmises that his brother’s remains may have washed up in the Barrens, a marshy area. He enlists the assistance of his pals, believing Georgie may still be alive. Ben Hanscom, one of Bill’s new classmates, discovers that the town has a centuries-long history of mysterious tragedies and child disappearances. Ben runs into the Barrens after being targeted by Bowers’ gang. He encounters Bill’s company. They discover the shoe of a missing girl called Betty Ripsom, while Pennywise assassinates a Bowers Gang member, Patrick Hockstetter, while exploring the sewers for Ben.

Beverly Marsh, a girl who has been tormented due to suspicions of promiscuity, joins the group as well; both Bill and Ben develop emotions for her. Later, after saving orphan Mike Hanlon from Bowers, the trio befriends him. Each member of the gang has met horrifying manifestations of the threatening clown who assaulted Georgie: a headless zombie boy, a sink spewing blood that only children can see, a sick and decaying leper, a horrific artwork come to life, Mike’s parents on fire, and a horrific ghost of Georgie.

They’ve renamed themselves “The Losers Club” after realising they’re all being hunted by the same creature they refer to as “It.” People deduce that It takes on the form of what they dread the most, rising every 27 years to feed on the children of Derry before going to sleep, and travels via sewage pipes that all connect to an ancient stone well-concealed underneath an abandoned home. Following another Pennywise assault, the party heads to the home to confront It, only to find themselves divided and scared. While Pennywise brags to Bill about Georgie, the Losers reassemble and Beverly impales Pennywise in the head, causing the clown to flee. The gang exits the mansion and fragments, with just Bill and Beverly remaining steadfast in their struggle against It.

Beverly is snatched by Pennywise weeks later, after confronting and incapacitating her sexually abusive father. The Losers Club reforms and returns to the abandoned house in order to rescue her. Bowers confronts the group after being driven mad by It; Mike fights back and knocks Bowers into the well to his apparent death.

The Losers descend into the sewers and discover Its underground lair, which is a mound of decaying circus equipment and children’s things around by the remains of Its kid victims. Beverly, who has been rendered unconscious by exposure to brilliant lights within Its gaping mouth, regains consciousness when Ben kisses her. Bill meets Georgie but soon realises he is in disguise. Pennywise kidnaps Bill and offers to spare the others and go into hibernation in exchange for allowing It to feed on him. The Losers fight this, overcoming their individual anxieties in the process.

It is finally beaten and flees further into the sewers, with Bill proclaiming that it will perish from starvation during its sleep. Bill ultimately comes to grips with his brother’s death after discovering the remnants of Georgie’s raincoat and is consoled by his pals. As summer draws to a close, Beverly reveals the group of a vision she had while catatonic in which she saw them battling It once again as grownups. The Losers pledge a blood pledge that if It returns, they will return to Derry as adults. After the others have said their goodbyes and dispersed, Beverly and Bill discuss her upcoming departure for Portland to live with her aunt. Bill expresses his affections to her before she departs, and the two kiss.
