A Nigerian-born American professional basketball player who led the Houston Rockets to consecutive National Basketball Association (NBA) championships in 1994 and 1995, Hakeem Olajuwon, full name Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon, also known as “the Dream,” was born on January 21, 1963, in Lagos, Nigeria, and is best known as “the Dream.”

Olajuwon had never played basketball before the age of 15, preferring instead to participate in association football (soccer) and team handball in Lagos, Nigeria. When the 7-foot (2.13-metre) centre had finished familiarising himself with the sport, he was recruited by the University of Houston to play college basketball there for the next two years. In Olajuwon’s first season, Houston reached the Final Four (national championship semifinals) in the 1982 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament, where they lost to eventual champion Duke (see March Madness).

Even though Houston advanced to the Final Four the next year, they were defeated in the national championship game by North Carolina State University in a spectacular upset; despite this, Olajuwon was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. In 1984, Houston progressed to the final game of the NCAA tournament for the second time, but Olajuwon’s squad was unable to win the national title as they were defeated by Georgetown University, who was led by great player Patrick Ewing.

The Houston Rockets picked Olajuwon as the first overall choice in the 1984 NBA draught, and he left college following his junior year to join the team. The Rockets made the playoffs in his first season with the club, and in his second season with the team, they came up just short of winning the title, falling to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, which was his last season with the team. After that, the Rockets regressed slightly, making it no more than once past the first round of the play-offs between 1987 and 1992.

However, Olajuwon maintained his impressive individual play, which was highlighted by his tenacious defensive ability and his incredible footwork on offence in the postseason. His hallmark move was known as the “Dream Shake,” which consisted of a sequence of feints, spins, and drop steps that he would execute near to the basket in order to surprise opposing players and create an opening for Olajuwon to shoot the ball.

In the mid-1990s, Olajuwon achieved the height of his professional career. He was selected the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year for the 1992–93 and 1993–94 seasons, and he was also named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 1993–94 season. He played with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1992–93 to 1993–94. A seven-game triumph against the New York Knicks in the NBA playoffs finished off his MVP season, and Olajuwon was crowned Finals MVP as a result of his performance. The next season, he led the Rockets to a second title and was awarded Finals MVP for the second time.

The late 1990s saw his output decline as a result of injuries and old age, and he was eventually moved to the Toronto Raptors in 2001, where he played for one season before retiring in 2002 at the age of 37. He retired with 26,946 points scored in his career and 13,748 rebounds in his career, ranking him 7th in the NBA’s all-time scoring list and 11th in the league’s all-time rebounding list. He was also the league’s all-time leader in blocked shots (3,830). Olajuwon was selected one of the NBA’s 50 best players in 1996, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a 12-time All-Star and was named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players in 2008.

A professional basketball league in the United States was created in 1949 by the merging of two competing organisations, the National Basketball League (founded 1937) and the Basketball Association of America (founded 1946). In 1976, the National Basketball Association (NBA) acquired four clubs from the American Basketball Association (ABA), which had folded the previous year.

By the early 1980s, the NBA was beset by problems like money-losing clubs, poor attendance, dwindling television ratings, and a lack of widespread national popularity. The NBA quickly recovered under the leadership of David Stern, the league’s commissioner since 1984, who was instrumental in transforming the league into a worldwide entertainment organisation. Star players like as Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and, most notably, Michael Jordan were prominently promoted via aggressive marketing. Other developments included salary caps for players in the league, lucrative broadcast rights for network and cable television, and enlarged All-Star Game celebrations, among other things.

It was decided to split the NBA’s membership into two conferences, each of which had three divisions. There were 30 teams, which were divided into the following groups: At the conclusion of each season, the top-ranked teams compete in a playoff to decide who will be crowned NBA champion and so earn the title of world champion. The Boston Celtics, led by centre Bill Russell, were arguably the most dominant team in NBA history during the period 1956–57 to 1968–69.

however, the league at the time consisted of only 8–14 teams, and team owners were generally reluctant to sign African American players during that time period; as a result, the Celtics won 11 of 13 titles during that period. Aside from the Minneapolis (later Los Angeles) Lakers in the 1950s, the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s, and the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, there were a number of other notable teams.
