Harsimrat Kaur Badal is a former Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Industries in the Government of India, as well as a Lok Sabha Member from Bathinda. She is a Shiromani Akali Dal Party member. Her husband’s name is Sukhbir Singh Badal. He is the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal and a former deputy chief minister of Punjab. She resigned from the cabinet on September 17, 2020, in order to protest a number of farmer-related ordinances and legislation.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal Biography:
Harsimrat Kaur Badal was born in Delhi on July 25, 1966. Her father’s name is Satyajit and her mother’s name is Sukhmanjus Majithia. She is a matriculating student with a diploma in textile design. On November 21, 1991, she married Sukhbir Singh Badal. The couple has three children: two daughters and a son. Bikram Singh Majithia is an Akali MLA from Majitha and a former minister in the Punjab state government led by her father-in-law, Parkash Singh Badal.
Badal comes from a family that can be linked back to Attar Singh Majithia, an influential general in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army. Badal was born and raised in New Delhi, where she attended Loreto Convent School. She later went into textile design and completed a three-year course in textile design.
Badal’s political career began with the 2009 Indian general election. She was appointed to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Bathinda constituency by a margin of 120,960 votes over Indian National Congress candidate Raninder Singh. Her first speech, delivered on December 3, 2009, expressed her concern for the victims and survivors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. She was a part of the “Nanhi Chhan” project, which aimed to save girl children and trees.
Badal was re-elected as an MP from Bathinda in 2014, defeating the joint candidate of the Indian National Congress and the People’s Party of Punjab, Manpreet Singh Badal. She has been selected as State Minister for Food Processing in the Modi government as a result of this. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, she was elected for the third time in a row from Bathinda. She narrowly defeated Congress candidate Amrinder Singh, Raja Warring, by around 21,000 votes.
She continued her Ministry of Food Processing Industries in May 2019.
She resigned from the cabinet on 17 September 2020 to protest against the new farm bills passed by the government.
