How to Meet Dalai Lama Personally and Face to Face

The Dalai Lama, also known as Gyalwa Rinpoche by Tibetans, is the current Dalai Lama, Tibet’s top spiritual leader and a former political leader. He is also the head of the Gelug school, Tibetan Buddhism’s newest school, which is technically led by the Ganden Tripa. The Dalai Lama was given temporal powers by Tibet’s central government, the Ganden Phodrang, until his exile in 1959.

The Dalai Lama founded the Central Tibetan Administration, an independent Tibetan government in exile, in the north Indian hill station of Mussoorie on April 29, 1959, and relocated to Dharamsala in May 1960. In 2011, he stepped down as the country’s political leader to make room for a democratic administration.

During the Tibetan uprising of 1959, the Dalai Lama fled to India, where he now lives in exile as Tibet’s most significant spiritual leader. The Dalai Lama continues to fight for Tibetan welfare while advocating for the Middle Way Approach in discussions with China for Tibet’s autonomy and the protection of Tibetan culture, particularly Tibetan religious rights.

The Dalai Lama also meets with other world leaders, religious leaders, philosophers, and scientists, and gives Tibetan Buddhist teachings all over the world. His research focuses on the environment, economy, women’s rights, nonviolence, interfaith communication, physics, astronomy, Buddhism and science, cognitive neuroscience, reproductive health, and sexuality, among other topics.

The Dalai Lama’s Kalachakra lectures and initiations are international events, in addition to his teachings on Tibetan Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He was named Chief Patron of the Maha Bodhi Society of India during the Maha Bodhi Society of India’s Annual General Meeting in 2008.

In 1989, the Dalai Lama was given the Nobel Peace Prize, as well as the US Congressional Gold Medal in 2006. The Dalai Lama was called one of Mahatma Gandhi’s “Children” and Gandhi’s spiritual successor to nonviolence by Time magazine. [The Dalai Lama said in a 2020 statement to Time magazine that the COVID-19 pandemic must be combated with compassion, empirical science, prayer, and the courage of healthcare workers.
