How to Meet Pawn Stars Personally and Face to Face

Pawn Stars is an American reality television show produced by Leftfield Pictures and shown on History. The show is set in Las Vegas, Nevada, and follows the daily happenings at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, a 24-hour family business founded in 1989.

During a weekend visit to Las Vegas in 2008, Brent Montgomery and Colby Gaines of Leftfield Pictures were impressed by the assortment of diverse and sometimes sleazy pawn shops and decided to create Pawn Stars.

They sought for a family-run store to base a TV series around until they located the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip, thinking such shops may include interesting personalities. The series premiered on July 26, 2009, and quickly became the network’s highest-rated show and the second-most-watched reality show behind Jersey Shore.

With narration given by either the Harrisons or Chumlee, the series portrays the staff’s encounters with clients who bring in a variety of items to sell or pawn, and who are shown bargaining over the price and discussing the artifact’s historical history.

The show also chronicles the cast’s interpersonal problems. In response to these tensions, one critic compared the show to a “Antiques Roadshow hijacked by American Chopper’s Teutul family.” The show has been described as “one part Antiques Roadshow, a sprinkle of LA Ink, and a dash of COPS” by TV Guide.

Several local experts in a range of professions, two of whom have gone on to start their own spin-off series, often attend to assess the objects being sold or pawned. Rick Dale, an antique restorer and metal artist, stars in the first spin-off, American Restoration, which aired in October 2010, and Danny “The Count” Koker, a mechanic and vehicle restoration specialist, starring in the second spin-off, Counting Cars, which premiered on August 13, 2012. The 16th season of the show debuted on January 21, 2019, in a new hour-long format.
