Howard Schultz recalls the first time he stepped into the original Starbucks in 1981 with great clarity. Starbucks had only been operating for ten years at the time, and there were no locations outside of Seattle. Starbucks was founded in 1971 by old college friends Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker, as well as their neighbour, Zev Siegl. The mermaid logo, which has become synonymous with the coffee company, was also created by the three friends.
In 2000, Schultz declared that he would step down as CEO but would continue to serve as chairman. By 2007, the chain had grown to over 15,000 outlets globally, but it was in trouble, so Schultz returned as CEO in January 2008.
He oversaw the closing of 900 stores and pursued an aggressive expansion plan that included the purchases of a bakery chain and a coffee-brewing machine manufacturer, as well as the launch of an instant coffee brand. He was also in charge of overseeing updates to Starbucks’ menus. These moves were largely fruitful, and Starbucks’ financial situation had improved by 2012. Schultz stepped down as CEO again five years later, but he remained involved in the business, acting as executive chairman until 2018.
Schultz received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and appeared at the 2017 Arizona State University graduation ceremony. Schultz received the National Equal Justice Award from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in November 2017.
