Idina Menzel was born in Syosset hamlet in New York on 30 May 1971 as Idina Kim Mentzel. She grew up in Syosset and went to high school in Syosset. She received a BFA in Drama from the “Tisch School of the Arts” connected with New York University.
After her parents split, Idina was who, 15 years later, began to perform as a Bat Mitzvah and wedding songstress to achieve the goals and support her university studies. She eventually dropped the ‘t’ into her nickname, Mentzel, to facilitate pronunciation of her name.Idina Menzel debuted successfully in Broadway in 1995 while auditioning for Maureen Johnson’s role in the Rent musical theatre. For her appearance in ‘Rent,’ she received a Tony Award nomination, and appeared as Maureen Johnson on 1 July 1997 for the last time.
Menzel’s debut album “Still I Can’t Be Still” was promoted by Hollywood Records, based on Broadway’s success. The initial cast also included ’42’ Summer, ‘Hair’ and ‘Aida.’She has been nominated for a Drama Desk Award for depicting Kate at the ‘The Wild Party’ off-Broadway. She also performed in many other off-Broadway productions, including ‘The Vagina Monologues’ and ‘See What I Wanna See.’
In a theatrical rendition of the novel ‘Wicked: The life, and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,’ Idina co-starred with the actress-cum singer, Kristin Chenworth, who won the 2004 Tony Award in category ‘Best Leading Actress in a Musical’ for the production of Elphaba, ‘Wicked’s Protagonist.
When ‘Wicked’ was performed at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London’s West End district in 2006, Menzel recreated her act like Elphaba. For the three months, Idina was the most expensive female performer at West End, raising a cool $30,000 each week.
She was nominated for her 2nd Tony Award in ‘If’ but ultimately lost to Jessie Mueller. When the music was performed in theatre in various states on a national tour, Elizabeth played in seven straight shows before bowing out for good.
Idina performed publicly as a singer at the 1998 “Lilith Fair” concert. She is performing repeatedly in New York City on her national tours. Hollywood Records published her first solo album ‘Still, I Can’t Be Still’ in 1998.
She released her second record, ‘Here,’ which was endorsed by Zel Records independently in 2004. She featured on ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Beowulf’ soundtracks, published respectively in 2005 and 2007. She also sung a duet with the Welsh baritone songster, Rhydian Roberts.
On 19 July 2010, in a White House Broadway event, where President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama were present, Idina crooned “What I Did for Love” and “Defying Gravity.” She had embarked on a performance excursion earlier in 2010 entitled ‘Barefoot on the Symphony Tour.’On 14 October 2014, she debuted her fourth album, ‘Holiday Wishes.’ On the 10th place on the Billboard 200 the album reached its highest level in charts.
