Ivan Lendl, a former world number one and eight-time Grand Slam singles champion, is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. His total of 19 Grand Slam singles final appearances has since been exceeded by Roger Federer (in 2009) and Rafael Nadal (in 2014). Ongoing success in the game saw him reach his first top-level singles final in 1979. He won seven singles titles in 1980, including three tournament triumphs in a row.

In 1981, he went on a winning streak that included 10 additional wins, including the first season-ending ‘Masters Grand Prix’ tour title, which he won by defeating Vitas Gerulaitis in five sets.
