James Charles was born in Bethlehem, New York, on May 23, 1999, to Christine’s parents and a builder, Skip Dickinson, with a younger sibling, Ian Jeffrey. He attended Central High School in Bethlehem, where he graduated in 2017. Describing his background in high school, he said, “I did get bullied a lot in high school and personally, I just ignored it.” Charles first entered into beauty as an inexperienced hairstylist, and after being approached by a friend to do her makeup for a school dance, he began doing makeup. He quickly started doing it professionally for girls in his area after teaching himself how to do makeup.

Charles is an openly guy. At the age of 12, he went out to visit his friends. Addressing concerns about his gender orientation, he said, “I’m confident in myself and my gender identity — [I’m] happy being a boy. But at the same time, I love makeup. I have a full set of nails on all the time.” As of 2019, it is reported that his net worth is US$12 million. He bought a 7 million dollar house in Los Angeles in 2020.

Charles admitted to supermodel Naomi Campbell in May 2020 that he had botox injections on his forehead and lip filling injections.

He launched his self-titled YouTube channel while working as a local makeup artist in his hometown of Bethlehem, New York, sharing makeup tutorials. In 2016, after a tweet showcasing his makeup went viral online, he became the first male spokesperson for CoverGirl.

As of January 2021, Charles has accrued over 25 million viewers since launching his YouTube channel. He served as the presenter, director, and co-producer of Instant Influencer, the YouTube Originals reality competition season, in 2020. For his social media work, he has won several honours, including two People’s Choice Awards, two Streamy Awards, one Shorty Award, and one Teen Choice Award.

With the launch of his YouTube channel, where he shared beauty tips, Charles began his social media career in 2015. He soared to fame in September 2016 after a tweet of him recapturing his senior portrait with a ring light and lipstick on it went viral. As a result of his online success, Charles became a spokesperson for cosmetics company CoverGirl in October 2016, at the age of 17, serving with brand ambassador Katy Perry and making him the brand’s first ever male spokesman. In November 2018, Charles unveiled the Sisters Fashion clothing line and a beauty range, the Sister Collection, created in partnership with Morphe Cosmetics, a cosmetics company.

He had amassed over 10 million viewers on YouTube and over 10 million followers on Instagram by the beginning of 2019. His visit to Birmingham in January 2019 for the launch of the second UK store of Morphe Cosmetics triggered gridlock in the city centre. For her track “Sally Walker” in March 2019, Charles did Australian rapper Iggy Azalea’s makeup for promotional art and made an appearance in the music video of the album. In April 2019, he revealed that he will embark on the nationwide Sisters Tour throughout the US. However, after a heavily publicised feud with American social media figure Tati Westbrook, the tour was cancelled the following month. In October 2019, he launched the Artistry Palette, an eyeshadow palette, in partnership with Morphe Cosmetics.

The first season of the YouTube Originals reality competition series Instant Influencer, which debuted on his YouTube channel, was hosted, directed, and co-produced by Charles from April to May 2020. The series seeks to discover “the next great beauty influencer” with a $50,000 cash reward being presented to the winner.[18][19] In October 2020, Charles made a guest appearance in the music video for the song “Canceled” by Larray’s American social media celebrity.

On May 10, 2019, one of Charles’ long-time collaborators, Tati Westbrook, uploaded to her YouTube channel a 43-minute long video named “Bye Sister…” (stylized in all caps), in which she accused Charles of disloyalty after he shared an Instagram endorsement of a vitamin supplement firm rivalling her own supplement company, and of attempting to “trick a straight man into thinking that he is.” In less than a week, the video was downloaded more than 40 million times and led Charles to break a YouTube record for losing more than one million subscribers in less than 24 hours. His follow-up started to decline from 16.6 million subscribers on May 15, 2019 around May 6, 2019 to a low point of 13.4 million, improving more in the following days. During the same time, Westbrook’s subscriber count rose by over four million. Westbrook’s claims on social media were corroborated by American YouTuber Jeffree Star, adding that he thought Charles was a “danger to society” After Westbrook’s video was released, Swedish singer Zara Larsson also posted about Charles, alleging that he had given her boyfriend direct messages.

An 8-minute answer video titled “Tati” was later posted by Charles, discussing the problems posed by Westbrook and apologizing to his fans and both her and her friends. The video got mainly critical reviews and became one of YouTube’s most hated episodes. “No More Lies”No More Lies. It offered facts that debunked much of Westbrook’s allegations and contributed to Charles’s renewed support and Westbrook’s condemnation. Charles received one million subscribers shortly after its posting and Westbrook lost two hundred thousand. Westbrook later deleted her YouTube channel from the original video.

The controversy triggered media reporting on cancelling society, the perceived toxicity of the beauty community of YouTube, predatory perceptions of gay men, and online “drama” earnings.
