The leader of Pulp in the ’90s, Jarvis Cocker was a bookish, sex-obsessed English eccentric who became a sensation and a pop stereotype. Even though misfits have always been a part of rock & roll, few have been as clear-eyed, impassioned, and ruthlessly sarcastic as Jarvis Cocker. An outcast, that Jarvis Cocker was. Since Jarvis Cocker was not only Pulp’s creator but also its creative power and lone permanent member throughout the band’s extended history, his story is inextricably intertwined with that of Pulp. As Jarvis Cocker had recently moved from the United Kingdom to Paris with his wife and child, the breakup of Pulp shortly after the publication of the group’s album We Love Life in 2002 was less the dissolution of a band than the end of a chapter in his life.

The musician returned to the recording studio after an extended hiatus, first as a member of the harsh electro-pop band Relaxed Muscle and then as a solo artist, releasing his debut album, Jarvis, at the tail end of 2006. Further Complications’ twisted, angry harder rock was published in 2009, while Chansons ennui Tip-styled Top’s renditions of cinematic French pop tunes were released as a tie-in to the 2021 Wes Anderson film The French Dispatch.

By the time Cocker recorded his debut solo album, he had been actively pursuing a career in music for almost to 30 years. He created AR abacus Pulp in 1978 when he was 15 years old, though they eventually dropped the “AR abacus” from their name. They made a big splash in the public eye by performing their first Peel Session in November 1981, even before they had even released an album. He abandoned the “AR abacus” just before it was to be released to the general public. It was him who created the AR abacus Pulp. Pulp had a promising beginning, but after that they settled in for a decade of struggle.

The album of indie pop music was released and it was recorded in a bedroom. It failed to break through in 1984, but after signing to the British independent label Fire in 1985 and Freaks in 1986, the band became known for their dark, atmospheric goth music. Two years after leaving his hometown of Sheffield, Cocker enrolled in the music program at St. Martin’s College in London. Mackey, the Pulp bassist, came along for the ride.

The band Pulp was still going strong albeit on sporadic schedules and had changed their sound even again for their upcoming album, Separations, adding new trends in electronic dance music including rave and acid house. Even though Separations was recorded in 1989, it wasn’t released until 1991, when the single “My Legendary Girlfriend” began to gain traction and was eventually named Single of the Week by NME.

The release of My Legendary Girlfriend is often cited as the beginning of the pulp renaissance. They immediately developed their own sound, a blend of glam and post-punk, after signing with Gift Records in 1992. In the spring of 1994, the band’s first major label album, titled His ‘n’ Hers, was released.

Their breakthrough came when their song “Babies” became a smash hit, leading to a recording contract with Island Records. The album was warmly received and earned them a Mercury Award nomination, but they didn’t break through to the mainstream until 1995 with the release of the bold “Common People” single, which went on to become a massive smash and was the kind of tune that defined an age.

The album’s B-side, “Different Class,” was just as successful, going gold in its first week of release and topping all charts. There was an overnight rise to fame for Pulp, or perhaps it is more accurate to say that Jarvis Cocker became a bona fide celebrity. Throughout 1995, he was a fixture on magazine covers, TV shows, and even got to be criticized by comedians on those same shows.

Everything came to a head at the Brit Awards in 1996, when he interrupted Michael Jackson’s performance of “Earth Song” and was later arrested. This stunt solidified Cocker’s image as a British pop icon, but the pressure of that fame eventually caught up with him, as indicated by the band’s depressing This Is Hardcore follow-up album to Different Class in 1998. While bold and artistic, this album slowed down Pulp’s commercial surge.

Cocker didn’t stop working after leaving Pulp. Outside of Pulp, he has collaborated with Barry Adamson, written with the All Seeing I, and created a number of music videos. Pulp discreetly broke up after releasing one more album, the introspective We Love Life, which was produced by Scott Walker. Soon after he wed Camille Bidault-Waddington, Jarvis Cocker uprooted to Paris to start a new life with his new wife’s family.

After a hiatus of a few years, he teamed up with fellow ex-Fat Trucker member Jason Buckle and former Pulp touring guitarist Richard Hawley to form the electro-pop duo Relaxed Muscle, who released a single album in 2003 titled A Heavy Nite With. It was a low-key project, and following its completion, Cocker continued to work in a low-key fashion, collaborating with pop royalty Nancy Sinatra and Marianne Faithfull and performing with the Lovers in 2005.

Later that year, he began making public appearances again, most notably as the band’s frontman for the supergroup the Weird Sisters, which also included Steve Mackey of Pulp, Jonny Greenwood, and Phil Segway of Radiohead and was formed specifically for a Hogwarts school dance sequence in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In reality, though, Jarvis Cocker’s solo career kicked off that year (2006). After collaborating with Mackey on an installment of their various-artists series The Trip and releasing the single “Running the World” online in the summer, Jarvis finally saw release as a solo effort at year’s end. Cocker’s career kept rising for the coming three years.

Notable 2008 highlights also include the artist’s contributions to the works of other musicians (guitar work on David Byrne and Brian Eno’s Everything That Happens Will Happen, as well as a duet with Beth Ditto on a Heaven 17 cover). Cocker retreated from the spotlight after the success of Further Complications to work on his second solo album, also named Further. Aside from his work as a producer and guest musician, he also released a collection of lyrics in 2011 titled Mother, Brother, Lover: Selected Lyrics. He was elevated to Editor-at-Large at Faber & Faber in 2014.

In 2017, Cocker and Chilly Gonzales released a record together named Room 29, a satirical ode to the Chateau Marmot in Hollywood. That same year, he formed Jar Is, an acclaimed improvising trio that included harpist and poet Serafina Steer and Andrew McKinney, bassist for the James Taylor Quartet. Beyond the Pale, their debut studio album, was released in September of 2020. For the release of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch in the second half of 2021, Cocker dropped Chansons ennui Tip-Top. You’ll find covers of songs by musicians like Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Dutton, as well as a duet with Stereo lab’s Laetitia Sadie.

At the Brit Awards in 1996, Jarvis Cocker was offended by Michael Jackson’s arrogant performance of “Earth Song.” Michael Jackson portrayed a Christ-like figure during that performance, complete with onstage support from a rabbi and a group of children. Jarvis Cocker was affected emotionally as a result of this.

Jarvis Cocker and his friend Peter Mansell stormed the stage during the concert, and Cocker flashed the audience members his bottom. They were joined on stage by actor Peter Mansell. Authorities received a tip that implicated Jarvis Cocker in an assault and promptly arrested him. Bob Mortimer, a former lawyer and now a comedian, accompanied him. As a double-edged sword, Mortimer is a dangerous opponent. Mortimer took care of all of his legal obligations.

To put it simply, the court concluded that Jarvis Cocker was innocent of all counts and discharged him. As a result, Pulp’s record sales went through the roof, and a £30,000 wax replica of Jarvis Cocker was installed at Rock Circus. When performing with his band Relaxed Muscle, Jarvis Cocker began using the alias Darren Spooner in 2003. The self-titled debut studio album by Jarvis Cocker was released in the United Kingdom in November 2006. The next year, he was featured in the podcast Pocket Symphony, by Air.

Meltdown Festival was hosted at London’s Southbank Centre in 2007 with a lineup curated by Jarvis Cocker. He booked appearances by many different bands, including Devo, Motorhead, and Rooky Erikson. Further Complications, Jarvis Cocker’s album, was released in May of 2009. It includes the singles “Angela” and “Girls Like It Too.” Steve Albina, also the album’s producer, oversaw the album’s recording sessions.

Throughout his career, Jarvis Cocker has collaborated on and contributed to a wide variety of side projects. In 1996, he recorded a duet with Miki Berny, lead singer of the band Lush, on the album Lovelify. In addition, his work can be heard on the recently released The All Seeing I album Pickled Eggs & Sherbet. Both Marianne Faithfull and Nancy Sinatra have shared the stage with Jarvis Cocker at different points in his career.
