Joel Osteen was born on March 5, 1963, in Houston, Texas, United States. John Osteen and Dolores Pilgrim have six children together. Lakewood Church was built in the rear of an old feed shop by his father, a former Southern Baptist preacher.
In 1981, he graduated from Humble High School, a public high school in Humble, Texas, and went on to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he studied radio and television communications but did not graduate; he did not get a divinity school diploma.
He relocated to Houston in 1982, launched Lakewood’s television program, and produced his father’s televised sermons for 17 years, until his father died suddenly of a heart attack in January 1999.
Osteen married Victoria Osteen, who would eventually become the copastor of Lakewood Church, on April 4, 1987. They have two children: a son and a girl.
For many years, Osteen’s father pushed him to preach, but he refused, preferring to work behind the scenes until January 17, 1999, when he finally heeded his father’s advice and gave his first sermon. John Osteen died of a heart attack six days later.
Osteen began preaching regularly two weeks following his father’s death, and on October 3, 1999, he was appointed as the new senior pastor of Lakewood Church. Lakewood’s attendance has risen from 5,000 to 43,000 by 2014.
The former home of the NBA Houston Rockets and the AHL Houston Aeros, the Compaq Center, was purchased by Lakewood Church in 2003. $105 million was spent on renovations. It took almost 15 months to complete the modifications, which included the construction of five storeys to increase capacity.
The formal inauguration of Lakewood in 2005 was attended by an estimated 56,000 people, including Texas Governor Rick Perry and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Lakewood Church’s weekly service TV broadcast, according to Osteen, was seen in more than 100 countries in 2008. Lakewood Church reports that 7 million people watch its services each week.
Barbara Walters included Osteen in her list of the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2006. John McCain, a former presidential contender, called Osteen his favourite inspiring author. In 2010, the Osteen family attended a White House Easter luncheon sponsored by President Barack Obama.
When asked if he felt Mormons were Christians during a Fox News interview in 2008 during the Republican Party presidential primary race, Osteen said yes. He went on to say that he had never studied religion. Osteen declared his support for Israel in a 2011 interview.
