In the 1984–85 season, Vanbiesbrouck became a full-time member of the Rangers. On top of that, he was named to the NHL All-Star team the following year for his performance in goal. After 11 seasons with the New York Rangers, he was taken by the Florida Panthers in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft. He became the 15th goaltender in NHL history, and the first American, to win 300 games in his career while playing with the Florida Panthers. In the postseason, he led the Rangers to a series-opening victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. After that, he beat a Washington Capitals team that finished the regular season with 107 points.
