Judy Faulkner is the CEO and founder of Epic Systems, a Wisconsin-based healthcare tech firm. Epic Systems was created by Faulkner in 1979 under the name Human Services Computing. Faulkner was born in August 1943. The name of her parents is Louis and Del Greenfield. Her father, Louis, was a pharmacist, and her mother, Del, was the director of Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, which sparked Faulkner’s early interest in health care.
She was born and raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey’s Erlton neighbourhood, and graduated from Moorestown Friends School in 1961. Dickinson College awarded her a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison awarded her a master’s degree in computer science.
Madison, Wisconsin is where Faulkner calls home. Dr. Gordon Faulkner, a paediatrician, is her husband. They are the parents of three daughters.
Faulkner co-founded Human Services Computing with Dr. John Greist in 1979, soon after earning her master’s degree. Human Services Computing, which eventually became Epic Systems, launched in a basement at 2020 University Avenue in Madison, WI, with a $70,000 donation from friends and relatives.
The company has never taken venture capital or private equity investment and is now privately owned. In reality, Faulkner takes pride in the fact that Epic is a self-contained entity the company has never been sold, and Faulkner has confirmed that the company will never go public.
