Justice S A Bobde is an Indian judge who has been serving as the country’s 47th and acting Chief Justice since 2019. He previously served as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He is also the Chancellor of the Maharashtra National Law University in Mumbai and the Maharashtra National Law University in Nagpur. He has served on the Supreme Court of India for eight years and will retire on April 23, 2021.
Sharad Arvind Bobde was born on born April 24, 1956, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Between 1880 and 1900, his great-grandfather Ramachandra Pant Bobde, a Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin, was a well-known lawyer in Chandrapur (then Chanda). Later, the family relocated to Nagpur.
Shrinivas Ramachandra Bobde, his grandfather, was also a lawyer. Arvind Shrinivas Bobde, Bobde’s father, served as Advocate-General of Maharashtra in 1980 and 1985. Bobde’s older brother, the late Vinod Arvind Bobde, was a Supreme Court lawyer and constitutional specialist.
Bobde went to Nagpur’s St. Francis De’Sales High School for his education. He graduated from Nagpur’s St. Francis De Sales College and went on to Nagpur University’s Dr. Ambedkar Law College to study law.
He became a Senior Advocate in 1998 after enrolling as an advocate on September 13, 1978, and practising at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court with appearances before the principal seat in Bombay and the Supreme Court of India.
On March 29, 2000, Bobde was named as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court, and on October 16, 2012, he was promoted to Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, before being elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on April 12, 2013.
On November 18, 2019, he was appointed the 47th Chief Justice, succeeding Ranjan Gogoi. Justice Bobde was a member of the five-judge constitutional bench that heard and decided the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case on November 9, 2019. The court unanimously ordered the building of a Hindu temple on the disputed site, while also finding that the demolition of the Babri Masjid and its desecration in 1949 were illegal.
