Kadakampally Surendran is an Indian politician who currently works in the Pinarayi Vijayan ministry of the Kerala government as the Minister for Co-operation, Tourism, and Devaswom. He is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and currently serves on the party’s Kerala State Committee. From 2007 to 2016, he has served as the Thiruvananthapuram District Committee Secretary.

Kadakampally was born on October 12, 1954, in the Thiruvananthapuram, India. He is the son of C. K. Krishnan Kutty and Bhagavathi Kutty. Surendran attended Sambhuvattom Lower Primary School, Madhavapuram Upper Primary School, St. Joseph High School, S N College in Chempazhanthy, and University College in Thiruvananthapuram for his studies.

Sulekha Surendran is his wife, and they have two twins, Arun and Anoop. Sulekha, his wife, is a retired high school teacher from Thirumala, Thiruvananthapuram’s AMHSS. Surendran and his wife live in Pattom, Trivandrum’s LIC Lane.

He was involved in student protests and cultural events since he was in elementary school. He became involved in politics and civic events as a result of his long involvement with youth organisations.

He joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1974. (M). He was a member of the party’s Anayara Branch, Local Committee Petta, Vanchiyur Area Committee, Member, District Committee Trivandrum, and Secretary, District Committee Trivandrum. In 2008, at the CPI(M19th )’s State Conference in Kottayam, he was elected as a member of the Kerala State Committee.

He is presently a member of the National Council of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), an Indian socialist trade union organisation. He is a member of the Auto-Taxi Workers Federation, the K.S.F.D.C Employees Union, the C-DIT Employees Association, the Co-operative Academy of Technical Education (CAPE) Employees Union, and SPATO, among others.

He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Kazhakuttom constituency with a huge margin of more than 24000 votes and acted as the chairman of the Backward Caste Welfare Committee (1996-2001). Surendran has been a leading figure in the CPI(M) and other leftist political movements in Thiruvananthapuram’s district. In the state of Kerala, he is also a pioneer in trade union movements.
