Kamal Nath is an Indian politician who served as Madhya Pradesh’s 18th Chief Minister for about 15 months before resigning due to a political crisis. Since March 2020, he has acted as the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

He was born in Kanpur on November 18, 1946, into a business family. He attended The Doon School and graduated with a Bachelor in Commerce from the University of Calcutta’s St. Xavier’s Campus. He married Alka Nath on January 27, 1973, and they have two sons together.

In 1980, Nath was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha for the first time. In 1984, the 8th Lok Sabha, the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989, and the 10th Lok Sabha in 1991, he was re-elected. In June 1991, he was sworn in as a Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Forests by the Union Council of Ministers. He was the Union Minister of State for Textiles from 1995 to 1996.

In 1998, Nath was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha, and in 1999, he was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha. He was the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress from 2001 to 2004. (INC). In the 2004 elections, he was re-elected to the 14th Lok Sabha, and from 2004 to 2009, he served as Union Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Industry.

He re-entered the Cabinet as Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways on May 16, 2009, after winning elections in his constituency for the 15th Lok Sabha. As a part of a cabinet reshuffle in 2011, Nath took over as Minister of Urban Development, replacing Jaipal Reddy.

In addition to his current position as Minister of Urban Development, Nath was confirmed to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in October 2012. Nath took over for Pranab Mukherjee in late 2012 to help the Unified Progressive Alliance (UPA) government win a key debate on foreign direct investment in India (FDI). In December 2012, Nath took over as an ex officio member of the Planning Commission, replacing Minister of Rural Development Jairam Ramesh.

Kamal Nath was the only member of the newly elected 16th Lok Sabha to take the official oath as a member on the 4th and 5th of June 2014, and was named Pro Tem Speaker. The death of Union Cabinet Minister of Rural Development Gopinath Munde disrupted the first day of the Lok Sabha when the Pro Tem Speaker usually administers the oath to all other elected members. After paying tribute to Munde and maintaining a two-minute silence, the House adjourned. They were not formally members of parliament since no other elected members had taken the oath that day.

After the INC emerged as the single largest party with 114 seats, Kamal Nath was elected as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on December 13, 2018. The Institute of Management Technology (IMT), a management institution, has Kamal Nath as its president of the board of governors. He is the Chairman of the “Madhya Pradesh Child Development Committee” as well as the Patron of the Bharat Yuvak Samaj.

With ventures like the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, a 90 billion dollar industrial growth project, Nath emphasises the importance of infrastructure construction in India. The DMIC proposes significant infrastructure and industry development, as well as the development of an industrial zone spanning six Indian states. Over the first five years of the program, the region’s job capacity will be doubled, economic production will be tripled, and exports will be quadrupled.

Kamal Nath campaigns for a public-private partnership (PPP) model for completing large-scale projects like the DMIC and other infrastructure construction projects. He cites the performance of PPP models in India’s metro operations as an example.
