By the time Kirk was seven, a record contract had been offered to him because of his clear ability to sing in church. However, Gertrude denied the offer because of Kirk’s age. By the time he was 11 years old, he was directing the adult chorus at Mt. Rose Baptist Church, a position he held for the rest of his life. Asked by Coker, “It was terrifying,” he said. “A group of adults aged 60 and up were under my care. Is it possible to conceive someone so young telling their elders that they were singing incorrectly?”
Franklin, despite his devout upbringing, couldn’t escape the lure of the streets. “I was a moody kid,” he said in Texas Monthly. “I was alone in the house with an elderly woman. You know what? I just wanted to be a kid, so I went crazy when I was around my peers.” He has said in multiple interviews that his outbursts were prompted by a fear of being labeled a “church kid.”.
Although his actions were hardly extreme by street standards, he frequented pool halls, used marijuana, and got into fights. The Nu Nation Project, a collaboration between the Family, God’s Property, and a new Franklin-directed choir, One Nation Crew, was released in 1998. Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, and Bono were among the performers who contributed to the album, which won Franklin another Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. A farewell record with the Family, it was to be.
Later, Franklin contributed “Thank You” to the soundtrack for Kingdom Come (in 2001), before returning to the studio in 2002 with his debut solo effort, The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and spent 29 weeks on the Gospel Albums chart, following the success of its predecessor. With 2005’s Hero and 2007’s all-star extravaganza The Fight of My Life, Franklin continued to enjoy commercial success. He won two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album and Best Gospel Song for these two projects.
In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 2010, gospel superstar Kirk Franklin gathered an even larger group of gospel all-stars to record the benefit single “Are You Listening?” His first Billboard Hot 100 hit since 2005 appeared on his 2011 album Hello Fear, which featured the single “I Smile.” The record, which had a more upbeat tone than his last release, climbed to the top of the gospel list and stayed there for several weeks. Best Gospel Album Grammy and Best Gospel Song Grammy went to this album.
The following two and a half years were devoted to Franklin on the road. Having started his own record company under the name Fo Yo Soul, he put out his first album titled Losing My Religion in November of that year.
