Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is an Indian politician hailing from Kerala. From 2015 to 2020, he served as Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala State Committee, the party’s highest office at the state level.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was born on November 16, 1953, in Kodiyeri, Thalassery. He was born to Kunjunni Kurup and Narayani Amma. He attended Oniyan High School and Kodiyeri Junior Basic School. While at Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College in Mahe, he became involved in politics and later at University College in Thiruvananthapuram.

He married S. R. Vinodini, the daughter of ex-MLA M. V. Rajagopalan Master, in 1980, and they have two children, Binoy and Bineesh Kodiyeri.

In 1970, he joined the CPI(M) as a member of the students’ wing. Between 1973 and 1979, he was President of the Kerala State Committee of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and its All India Joint Secretary. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was imprisoned under MISA for 16 months during the Emergency in India.

He was the Kannur District President of the Democratic Youth Federation of India from 1980 to 1982. (DYFI). He is currently a member of the CPI (M) Polit Bureau and the Deputy Leader of the CPI (M) Parliamentary Group. He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Kannur in 1982, 1987, and 2001. He was elected from Thalassery in 2006 and 2011.

The Kerala High Court ordered a vigilance investigation into Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and other CPM cadres for irregularities involving funds taken from the State Treasury worth up to Rs. 3 crores on July 10, 2013. When Balakrishnan was Minister, these funds were used to recruit costly out-of-state lawyers to represent him. The Minister is one of the people suspected of being involved in the SNC Lavalin scandal. He was elected Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala State Committee on February 23, 2015.
