Krishna Poonia is an Indian discus thrower who has won international gold medals, a track and field runner who has competed in three Olympics, a Padma Shri and Arjuna Award winner, a politician from the Congress party, and the incumbent MLA from the Sadulpur constituency in Rajasthan. She participated in the Olympic Games in 2004, 2008, and 2012.
Poonia was born on May 5, 1977, in Agroha village, Hisar district, Haryana. Since her mother died when she was nine years old, she was adopted by her father and paternal grandmother. Krishna’s physical health was honed by working on her family’s farm when she was 15 years old, rather than by intensive athletic preparation.
She married Virender Singh Poonia, a former competitor who became her coach after their union, in the year 2000. In 2001, they welcomed a son into the world. Poonia retired from Indian Railways in 2013 and became a member of the Congress. They are residents of Jaipur. Poonia graduated from Jaipur’s Kanoria PG Mahila Mahavidyalaya with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
Poonia captured a bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. In the second attempt, she threw her personal best of 61.53 metres and placed third behind China’s Aimin Sing (63.52) and Ma Xuenjun (62.43). She had taken gold in the 46th Open National Athletics Championships, finishing ahead of favourites Seema Antil and Harwant Kaur and setting a new personal best of 60.10 metres.
She competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but finished 10th in the semifinals with a throw of 58.23, preventing her from reaching the finals. She set a new national record with a throw of 64.76 metres in Hawaii on May 8, 2012. In 2010, she also earned a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Guangzhou.
After being contacted by the Congress’s leadership, she joined the party in 2013 at an election rally in Churu, her husband’s hometown, in the presence of Rahul Gandhi and then-chief minister Ashok Gehlot.
She ran for the first time as a Congress candidate in the 2013 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election, finishing third behind the BJP and the BSP in the Sadulpur Assembly constituency. She ran for the same seat in the 2018 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election on a Congress ticket and won by 18084 votes out of 70020 votes.
Poonia was elected by the Congress Party for the Jaipur Rural constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. She faced BJP’s Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, an Olympian. By a margin of 393171 votes, she lost to Rathore.
Poonia has been assisting the Rajasthan State Health Ministry in its efforts to reduce female foeticide, as selective abortion of female foetuses is a major concern in India, especially in Poonia’s home state of Haryana. She’s also working to improve the sports facilities in Jaipur and around the country for youth.
