Lamar Alexander (born July 3, 1940 in Maryville, Tennessee, United States) is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in Latin American studies in 1962. He worked as a clerk to the United States Supreme Court after graduating from New York University with a law degree in 1965. New Orleans’ Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He later worked as an aide to U.S. President George H.W. Bush. Sen. Howard Baker was a member of President Ronald Reagan’s cabinet. Working as an assistant to the president’s executive assistant, Richard Nixon. Alexander married Honey Buhler in 1969, and the couple had four children together. The following year, he returned to Tennessee to manage Winfield Dunn’s gubernatorial campaign, the first Republican to do so in half a century. Alexander went on to cofound a law firm in Nashville in 1972.

In 1974, Alexander ran for governor on his own. Alexander’s campaign, however, was harmed by his association with Nixon, who resigned in August of that year due to the Watergate scandal, and he lost the election. He ran again in 1978, and this time he won. Alexander was known for implementing education reforms and promoting business in the state during his two terms as governor (1979–87).

He cofounded a chain of children’s day-care centres after leaving office in 1987. Before becoming president of the University of Tennessee system in 1988, he lived in Australia for a short time. In 1991, he left that position to become Secretary of Education in the United States’ administration. Mr. President, George H.W. With 54 percent of the vote, he was elected governor of Tennessee and senator of the United States, making him the first Tennessean to do so.

Alexander became known as a moderate to conservative Republican with a reputation for bipartisanship after being elected to the Senate in 2003. He was particularly interested in education issues, but his views on educational standards were increasingly skewed toward states’ rights. Later, he authored the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), which updated No Child Left Behind (2001) to give states more control over educational issues. Alexander also took a strong leadership role in the energy sector.

He was the chair of the Senate Republican Conference from 2008 to 2012, the third-ranking Republican position in the chamber. He later supported filibuster reform, proposing, for example, that it be prohibited for Supreme Court and other key federal government positions. In 2015, he was elected chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

He was a key figure in discussions about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in that capacity (2010; PPACA). Despite supporting a failed repeal and replace effort in 2017, he was involved in a bipartisan effort to strengthen the PPACA later that year. Alexander announced in 2018 that he would not run for reelection in 2020.
