Mahua Moitra is an Indian politician from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). She is a West Bengal MP representing the Krishnanagar constituency.
Mahua Moitra Biography:
Mahua Moitra was born in Kolkata, West Bengal on May 5, 1975. Taurus is her astrological sign. She attended a local Kolkata school for her primary education.
She received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Mathematics from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA. She was the top student in her class and worked as the Vice President of JP Morgan in London.
Mahua was attending her 10-year college reunion when she realized that all of her classmates were bankers and all of them were successful in only one field. On that day, she decided not to return to her 20-year college reunion as “just another managing director.” She resigned from her job and returned to India to pursue a political career.
Family, Husband, and Caste:
Mahua Moitra is from a Bengali Brahmin family. Dwipendra Lal Moitra is her father’s name. She says in an interview that she used to live in Scandinavia and that her former husband, Lars Brorson, was of Danish origin.
In 2008, Mahua Moitra joined the Indian National Congress (INC) youth wing. She worked hard and rose through the ranks to become a well-known leader and a familiar face throughout West Bengal. She was regarded as Rahul Gandhi’s most trusted confidante in West Bengal. She held out Rahul Gandhi’s Aam Admi ka Sipahi (AAKS) initiative in West Bengal and achieved incredible results.
Although she appreciated the recognition she was receiving and the way she was rising through the ranks, she disliked how Congress used to compromise with the Left. In 2010, she left the Congress and joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
She had a large following in West Bengal, which propelled her to rapid growth within the TMC. She was appointed as the TMC’s spokesperson and General Secretary. In 2016, she was named the TMC’s candidate for West Bengal’s Karimpur constituency. She was elected as an MLA in the 2016 Assembly elections.
Mamata Banerjee announced Mahua as the TMC candidate for the West Bengal Krishnanagar Constituency in the 2019 General Elections.
She spent a lot of time campaigning for the 2019 General Elections. She visited all of Krishnanagar’s districts, and with the help of TMC grassroots workers, she made great connections with people of all ages. According to reports, she went to areas that other leaders had never bothered to visit and were unaware existed. She used to talk to the people about their problems during her campaign.
She was elected as a Member of Parliament from West Bengal’s Krishnanagar Constituency in the 2019 General Elections. She defeated BJP candidate Kalyan Chaubey by a margin of 65,404 votes. A day after her name was announced as the winner of her Constituency, she posted her Certificate of Election on social media.
In her first speech in Parliament, she addressed India’s “rising fascism.” Her speech quickly went viral on social media. Many people referred to it as the speech of the year.
1. As the TMC’s spokesperson, she attended numerous live TV debates. During one such debate, in which Union Minister Babul Supriyo also took part, he referred to her as Mahua Drunk on Mahua (country alcohol in West Bengal is also known as Mahua). The news anchor immediately asked Supriyo to refrain from making personal remarks, and he later received a lot of backlash for this comment. On January 4, 2017, Mahua filed a defamation suit against Supriyo, claiming that he insulted her on national television, harmed her reputation by suggesting she was drunk and offended her modesty.
2. On January 11, 2017, Babul Supriyo filed a defamation case against Mahua Moitra and three other TMC members. He accused them of falsely accusing him of being involved in the Rose Valley Chit Fund Scam. Supriyo stated that Mahua, along with other TMC members, was using his name in the chit fund scam and convincing people that he was involved in the scam without providing any proof of his involvement.
3. On August 3, 2018, Mahua was detained at the Assam airport after slapping a female police officer. She was detained for the night and denied boarding her flight to Kolkata on suspicion of assaulting a police officer on duty. She was fired the next morning, and she fled to Kolkata, where a case was filed against her.
